1968 Olympic Games Ciudad de México, Mexico - Women's 4 x 100 m

Host City: Ciudad de México, Mexico Format: Top four in each heat advanced to the final.
Date Started: October 19, 1968
Date Finished: October 20, 1968
(Competitors: 60; Countries: 15; Finalists: 32/8)
Venue(s): University Olympic Stadium, Ciudad de México
Overview by IAAF    1968_olympic_stadium.jpg
Both the USA and Holland set world records, winning their heats in 43.4, with the surprising Dutch team 0.01 faster on automatic timing with 43.49. The USA, with three of the first five from the 100m final, were favourites, and so it transpired. Utilising blazing speed, and very average changeovers, the USA won by over 4m from Cuba, with the USSR just edging the Netherlands for third. Australia displayed baton passing as weak as the USA, and would otherwise have won a medal, while Becker impressed with a fine anchor leg for the FRG.

Summary by Sports-reference.com
In the rarified air of Ciudad de México, the United States and the Netherlands broke the world record in the heats with 43.4. But the Americans had the fastest runners, led by anchor runner Wyomia Tyus, who had earlier defended her 100 metre gold medal. Despite mediocre exchanges the US won the gold medal with Tyus crossing the line five metres ahead.
