1987 2nd IAAF World Championships - Rome - Men's Pole Vault

Host City: Rome, Italy Format: Qualifying round (5.55 or top 12 to final) (Sep 3)
Dates: August 28 – September 6, 1987
Nations participating: 159
Athletes participating: 1451
    Main venue: Stadio Olimpico
Overview by IAAF   stadio olimpico rome
Bubka, now firmly established as one of the world’s greatest athletes, took just two jumps to retain his title. He came in at 5.70 (same as his 1983 winning height) and returned at 5.85, at which point all but three of the finalists had been eliminated. These three (Gataullin, Vigneron and Kolasa) all went out at 5.85 whereas Bubka cleared easily. The Soviet vaulter then had the bar raised to 6.05. Just as he was preparing for his first attempt, a fanfare began for the women’s shot put medal ceremony, causing an angry Bubka to abort his effort. He returned with two poor tries before retiring.
These are the official results of the Men's Pole Vault event at the 1987 IAAF World Championships in Rome, Italy. There were a total of 24 participating athletes, with two qualifying groups and the final held on Saturday September 5, 1987.
