    Main venue: Stadio Olimpico
Overview by IAAF   stadio olimpico rome
World record holder Ingrid Kristiansen ran a clever tactical race in which she managed to discourage all her rivals despite being below her best form. The Norwegian took off in the second lap and by 1000m had a lead of some 20 seconds. By halfway (15:21.51), Kristiansen had started to lap the field. The chasing pack, led by Liz Lynch (5000m: 15:36.5) seemed to be racing for the silver medal. By the bell, the Norwegian’s lead was still 15 seconds, but this was cut dramatically as the race for the silver exploded. It was Zhupiyova, not her better-known teammate Bondarenko, who had the best finish. Her 61.5 last lap was more than 10 seconds faster than Kristiansen but she had left her effort too late.
The women's 10,000 metres event featured at the 1987 World Championships in Rome, Italy. There were a total number of 37 participating athletes, with the final being held on 4 September 1987.
