Dates: August 28 – September 6, 1987
Nations participating: 159
Athletes participating: 1451
    Main venue: Stadio Olimpico
Overview by IAAF   stadio olimpico rome
The GDR faced tough opposition from the USA, and their cause was not helped by the injury to Heike Drechsler the day before the heats. The world 200m record holder was unable to take her place on the team. The GDR won their heat but were precisely one second slower than the USA’s time in the other preliminary race. In the final, the GDR took the lead on the first leg through individual winner Gladisch. Oschkenat kept that advantage down the backstraight, but the United States went in front after a scintillating bend by the Griffith. Pam Marshall extended the US lead on the anchor, running away from Marlies Göhr.
The 4 x 100 metres relay at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Stadio Olimpico on September 5 and September 6.
