Busch claimed her third World Championship gold medal when she comfortably held off individual champion Bryzgina on the anchor leg. The GDR looked vulnerable without Marita Koch and were only fifth after the first changeover. However, Emmelmann’s stint of 49.1 followed by Müller’s 48.64 gave Busch a 15m advantage at the last changeover. The United States were an isolated third.
The 4 × 400 metres relay at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Stadio Olimpico on September 5 and September 6.
