| Rosa Mota’s great winning sequence in championship marathons came to an end when she fell back from the leaders at 24Km and dropped out at 26Km with abdominal pains. The Portuguese had been one of 10 women clear by halfway, led by Gradus (74:49). At 25Km the leading group had shrunk to six with Dörre leading from another Pole, Panfil. After another 10Km, these two had dropped all but Yamashita. The Japanese tried to break away at 40Km, but she could not shake off Panfil, who took a winning lead in the final 1200m. Yamashita held on for second to win her country’s first ever World Championship medal. |
