At the Barcelona Olympic Games. Devers took the 100m title by just one hundredth of a second. Stuttgart saw her win again by an even narrower margin. Devers. Ottey. Torrence and Privalova – four of the first five from the 1992 Olympic final – drew lanes 5-6-3-4 in the final. Privalova and Devers were away quickest. By 60m the American had a visible lead. while Ottey and Torrence had caught the Russian. In the last five metres Ottey surged and drew level with Devers. who produced a “double dip” – first with her chest then with her head. The two women crossed the line together. Torrence was the obvious bronze medallist. At first sight. it looked as if the Jamaican had won: she had been moving the quickest in the last few strides before the finish line. There was a long wait. during which the replays showed that Devers’s head had crossed the line first. But it was not clear whose torso was ahead. The result was announced as first. Devers 10.81. second Ottey 10.82.

The unfortunate Ottey – so often a bronze or silver medallist – had missed out yet again. A protest was lodged by the Jamaicans and the Jury of Appeal looked again at the photograph. The result was revised. with both women clocking 10.82. but the order was unchanged. “I feel for Merlene.” said Devers. “but I also feel that I beat her.” Her winning margin was actually just one thousandth: 10.811 to 10.812 (not 10.816/10.820 as widely reported). The photograph of the finish taken from the inside of the track showed Devers’s right shoulder just ahead of Ottey. When presented with her silver medal the following day. the Jamaican received a two-minute ovation from the sympathetic crowd
