| The first of the Gothenburg titles was won in impressive style by the European Champion Machado, who ran brilliantly when the temperature was 24°C in the shade. Machado and World Cup winner Ctun were among the leading group of eight at around 15Km. The pair started to draw clear at 18Km and by 25Km had opened up a 90-second lead. At 30Km, Machado broke clear decisively. The winning time of 2:25:39 was impressive in the conditions. However, late in the evening it was revealed that the race was short by 400m. “The runners were supposed to run four laps before leaving the stadium but instead ran three,” explained Competition Director CarlGustav Tollemar. “This means they only ran 41,795m in total. I deeply regret this unfortunate mistake which will not affect the final placings.” This error was not noticed until after the end of the race. The woman to suffer most from the mistake was Sobanska, who eased off after thinking she had started too quickly. She finished strongly in fourth place and felt she might otherwise have had a chance to catch Ferrara. When I woke up I felt perfect and my confidence only got better.” With an extra 400m her time would have been in the region of 2:27:00 compared with her personal best of 2:27:42. |
| The Women's Marathon at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden was held on Sunday August 5, 1995. Due to judges' error the marathon course was 400 metres short of the normal distance as at the start the women left the stadium one lap too early. |
