Event report men 100m final
Maurice Greene of the USA equalled the World Championships’ record of 9.86, set by Carl Lewis in Tokyo in 1991, to become the first USA World or Olympic 100m champion since Lewis’ Tokyo triumph. Canada’s Donovan Bailey could not retain his title, clocking 9.91 in second place. Tim Montgomery of the USA was third in 9.94. Greene and Montgomery’s medals are the first USA men’s 100m medals in a major championship since the World Championships in 1993 when Andre Cason was second to Linford Christie. Greene, in lane three, had a superb start, with Frank Fredericks beside him in lane 2 also getting away well. Bailey in lane 4 was still trailing at the half way point while Montgomery in lane 7 was closing on the Canadian. From 60m Greene opened up a gap on Fredericks and although Bailey closed in the final stages, he could not catch the inspired American. Montgomery pipped Fredericks (9.95) for third in the last few strides while one of the pre-race favourites, Ato Boldon, ran well below his best and could only finish fifth in 10.02.

Event report men 100m semi finals
With qualification completed, the final of the men’s 100m still looks likely to be a close battle between four men - USA’s Maurice Greene, the defending champion Donovan Bailey of Canada, the Olympic silver medallist Frank Fredericks of Namibia and the Olympic bronze medallist, Ato Boldon of Trinidad and Tobago. These four were the fastest qualifiers for this evening’s final. Semi-final 1: Boldon dominated the first heat. He capitalised on a good start and an excellent pick up - he was two metres ahead of the field by 50m. He was still that margin clear at the finish, and despite easing up and looking around, he crossed the line in 10.00. Mike Marsh, in the lane outside Boldon, started badly and had to make up a lot of ground in the second half of the race to claim third place in 10.21, just behind Davidson Ezinwa of Nigeria who held on for second in 10.15. Canada’s Bruny Surin was the fourth qualifier in 10.22. Semi-final 2: the second semi-final was a much closer affair, primarily between Greene and Bailey. Both got a good start but Bailey was away particularly well. Fredericks started badly and spent the rest of the race chasing his two rivals. He got close, but Bailey and Greene had eased up over the last 10 metres, looking at each other as they crossed the line. Greene got the verdict of a photo finish, winning with 9.90 to Bailey’s 9.91. Fredericks was third in 9.93 and USA’s Tim Montgomery claimed the fourth qualification spot in 10.08. Bailey’s time was his best of the year.

Event report men 100m quarter finals
A head to head between this year’s two fastest sprinters in the first heat of the second round of the men’s 100m brought Ato Boldon of Trinidad and Tobago a new national record and the world’s best time for 1997. His time, 9.87, is the fastest ever in a qualifying heat of a men’s 100m - only four men have ever run faster. USA’s Maurice Greene, just pipped at the line by Boldon, ran 9.90 for the third time this year, although Boldon, the Olympic 100m and 200m bronze medallist, appeared to be easing up in his last few strides. Two other men ran under 10.00 - both Tim Montgomery of the USA and Namibia’s Frank Fredericks ran 9.99. Montgomery beat Donovan Bailey in heat 3. The defending champion and world record holder suffered his second defeat in a qualifying heat in one day. He ran 10.10 after a bad start. Most of the other main contenders for places in tomorrow’s final qualified without difficulty, Canada’s Bruny Surin, the world silver medallist in 1995, with his best time of the year, 10.06. Seun Ogunkoya of Nigeria, who has run 9.97 this year, was eliminated. He injured a hamstring in the first round

Event report men 100m heats
Despite a cluster of World Championships and Olympic medallists, the biggest roar of the first round of the men’s 100m was for Greece’s Mediterranean Games champion, Agelos Pavlakakis, who broke the national record and beat the world record holder and defending champion, Donovan Bailey, with his run of 10.11 in heat 4. Bailey ran 10.17, although he was easing up over the final few metres. Equal with Pavlakakis on time was Trinidad and Tobago’s Olympic bronze medallist, Ato Boldon, the quickest of the medal contenders. All the leading runners of 1997 qualified for the quarter finals, to be held this evening. If Pavlakakis produced the biggest roar, his teammate, Alexandros Genovelis, produced the most bemusement. He arrived on the track as the rest of the athletes in heat 5 were already on the start line. The race was held up for five minutes while he prepared his blocks - he finished 6th in 10.58. There were two national records: by Pavlakis and by Sergejs Insakovs of Latvia, who ran 10.28; and one equal national record, Mohamed Amir of the Maldives, who ran 11.18 in heat 8.
