Overview by IAAF |

|
With defending champion Didoni finishing seventh and Olympic gold medallist Pérez 14th, the race looked to be going the way of Olympic silver medallist Markov, who by halfway had built up a 19-second lead over Shchennikov in 40:05. He, however, was disqualified just before 15k, at which point Garcia held a 5-second advantage and the Mexican doubled that over the final 5Km. Victory was especially sweet as he had been disqualified late in the race when in medal position both in 1993 and 1995. On this occasion, after a cautious start (9th at halfway in 40:50), he received two warnings, as did silver medallist Shchennikov while the third placed Khmelnitskiy finished with a clean sheet from the judges. Disqualified this time, in retrospect for a doping violation dating back to 1996, was 1992 Olympic Daniel Plaza (originally 10th). |
These are the official results of the Men's 20 km Walk event at the 1997 World Championships held on Saturday 2 August 1997 in Athens, Greece. There were a total number of 49 participating athletes. |

Event report men 20km walk
Mexican Daniel García had tonight his biggest revenge by winning the 20 Km race walk that finished at the sunset of the first day of competitions of the 6th IAAF World Championships. García, who had been disqualified at the two previous editions of the World Championships won in 1:21:43. The 5th Km of the race that took place on a nice evening with 30° C and 45% of humidity, was covered in 20:11 by Russians Mikhail Shchennikov, Ilya Markov and the defending World Champion, Italian Michele Didoni. The 2nd group, which had the Olympic Champion Jefferson Pérez from Ecuador and García, was 9 seconds behind them. At 33 minutes, Markov who was the lonely leader after leaving his countryman behind, had already received his first warning a couple of minutes earlier. The first half was covered in 40:05 by Markov, followed by Shchennikov 19 seconds behind, and 21 seconds later was the group that included Pérez, García and Belarus’ Mikhail Khmelnitsky. García and Pérez left Khmelnitsky behind and caught Shchennikov at the minute 48th. Two minutes later Markov received his second warning of the evening, but that didn’t make him ease his pace. García and Shchennikov left Pérez behind at the 51 minute, and 2 minutes later occurred a radical change in the race. With 2 laps to go at the loop that the walkers had to cover 5 times, Markov received his 3 warning, and was disqualified. After that García left Shchennikov and reached the 15 Km mark in 1:00:55, with the Russian 5 seconds behind, Khmelnitsky in 3rd place and Pérez falling back. García who was warned for the first time at 44 minutes, received his 2nd card with 1:10 minutes covered in the race, but Shchennikov also had two warnings and couldn’t risk much more, so he had to settle for the Silver Medal, with Khmelnitsky taking the bronze. Pérez who has the fastest time of the year, kept falling and finished 14th. Among other walkers disqualified were Guatemalan Julio Martínez, a man who had the 5th best time of the year among the 49 walkers that started the race.
