1997 World Championships in Athletics Athens, Greece

1997 6th IAAF World Championships - Athens - Men's Decathlon

Host City: Athens, Greece
Dates: August 1–10, 1997
Nations participating: 198
Athletes participating: 1882
    Main venue: Olympic Stadium
Overview by IAAF   oaka7
With Dan O’Brien electing not to challenge for a fourth world title the scene was set for the crowning of the first new champion in a decade. The honour fell to Dvoák, and what a deserving successor he proved to be as he piled up history’s fourth highest score of 8837. Tenth in 1993 and fifth in 1995, the Atlanta Olympic bronze medallist set personal bests in the 100m, shot and 400m on the first day but still trailed Huffins, 4548 to 4527, with Busemann (4446) and Hämäläinen (4435) next, the latter now representing Finland after twice finishing runnerup in this event for Belarus. Dvoák took the lead at the start of day two thanks to a formidable hurdles personal best of 13.61 but Huffins regained the advantage with a much better discus mark. The pole vault saw another change as Hämäläinen went into a 64 point lead over Dvoák with Huffins now third, and three fouls in the javelin spelt the end of the American’s hopes. The javelin was, however, the key to Dvoák’s success; a lifetime best of 70.34 not only propelled him into a 96-point lead over Hämäläinen but a nine-event score of 8127 put him within sight of O’Brien’s world record of 8891. He needed a 1500m time of 4:27.13 as against a pb of 4:29.69, but the Czech settled for 4:35.40. Had he not eased off he might have broken Daley Thompson’s European record of 8847. Busemann finished a safe third with Fritz soaring from 13th to 4th on the second day
These are the official results of the Men's Decathlon competition at the 1997 World Championships in Athens, Greece. There were a total number of 34 participating athletes, including fourteen non-finishers. The competition started on August 5, 1997, and ended on August 6, 1997.

  110 Metres Hurdles

Tomas Dvorak (Czech Republic) took the overall lead in the decathlon after a personal best of 13.61 in the first event of the second day. Dvorak is looking like a favourite to win the decathlon as in all six events he has performed better than in his personal best series (in Atlanta 1996). Dvorak has a total of 5552 points. Chris Huffins (USA), who had been leading the competition until this event, ran 14.04 and is now in 2nd place with 5517 points. Two challengers threaten Huffins' hold on silver. Frank Busemann (Germany) was the fastest of the field in the hurdles with a 13.55. Busemann maintained third place which he held after day 1. He is now 38 points behind Huffins with his 5479 points. Also, Eduard Hamalainen (Finland) ran well, recording a seasonal best of 13.74. Hamalainen, who is very strong in the next two events, is looking to catch Huffins and Busemann in the discus and pole vault. Hamalainen is now in 4th place with 5443 points, 36 less than Busemann. One of the favourites, 1992 Olympic champion, Robert Zmelik (Czech Republic), was unlucky to fall after the 6th hurdle and not finish the race. Also, Sebastian Chmara (Poland), in 6th place after day 1, was forced to drop out before the start of day 2.

Discus Throw

Chris Huffins (USA) produced a fine throw of 49.22 in the discus to regain the overall lead he had lost in the previous event. Huffins now has a total of 6371 points. The best of the field in this event was Eduard Hamalainen (Finland) with a throw of 50.50. Hamalainen lifted himself from 4th to the 2nd spot. The Finn now is at 6324, 47 points away from Huffins. Tomas Dvorak (Czech Republic), who was in the lead after the hurdles, dropped to 3rd after this event, despite having a good throw of 45.16, only about 1m less than his pb. Frank Busemann is now 4th after throwing 42.56, a minor disappointment for him. Busemann's points are 6196, 175 points less than leader Huffins. The next event will tell much of the story as Hamalainen should jump at least 30cm more than Dvorak to gain points before his weak event, javelin. Of the first four, Hamalainen has the best pb, 5.30. Busemann is the best of rest with 5.00 and Huffins & Dvorak usually vault a little under 5m. In the javelin, Dvorak can throw over 70m, Busemann little under 70m, and Hamalainen & Huffins are capable of a throw of about 63m.
