Riedel’s status as a latter-day Al Oerter was enhanced when he unleashed two mighty throws beyond 68m to claim his fourth successive world title. Although his sequence. which began in 1991. doesn’t match up to Oerter’s four Olympic golds spaced four years apart from 1956 to 1968. it is still an outstanding example of consistency and longevity at the highest level. Another thrower who has been at or near the top even longer. world record holder Schult (age 37). actually led for the first round with 66.14 and that held up for a bronze to add to his gold of 1987 and bronze of 1993. The silver went to Alekna. who had only qualified for the final at his final attempt. Godina. in fifth. place produced the best shot/discus showing at global level since Bud Houser’s Olympic double in 1924.
 These are the official results of the Men's Discus Throw event at the 1997 World Championships in Athens. Greece. There were a total number of 42 participating athletes. with the final held on Sunday August 10. 1997. The qualification mark was set at 63.00 metres.

Event Report Men Discus Throw Final

Lars Riedel of Germany won his fourth straight discus title, firing off three throws better than the best of his competition. Teammate Jurgen Schult led the first round with his 66.14 best, but Lithuania’s Virgilijus Alekna (66.70) and Riedel (68.24) passed him in the second round. In the third, Riedel improved to 68.54. The next two rounds saw no position changes at the top. In the final round, Vladimir Dubrovshchik of Belarus scared Schult for the bronze with a 66.12, just two centimeters short. Then, in the final throw of the competition, Riedel underscored his dominance with a 66.80.

Event report men discus throw qualification

The 1996 Olympic champion, 1993 and 1995 world champion, and 1997 world leader, German Lars Riedel only needed one throw to advance to Sunday’s final, a toss of 66.46m. Riedel’s throw was the best of the day. Competing in group B, the German was followed by Lithuania’s Virgilijus Alekna who threw 65.22m in the 3rd round. Fourth and fifth in this group were Americans Adam Setliff (63.72m) and the 1997 world champion in shot put, John Godina (63.48m). In group A only 3 athletes achieved the automatic standard (63.00m). First was the world record holder, German Jurgen Schult with a mark of 64.60 in his 2nd attempt. Second was Ukrainian Vitaliy Sidorov with 63.08m in his 1st attempt, and 3rd was Vasili Kaptyukh (63.06m). The 3rd German athlete in this competition, Andreas Seelig was 4th with 62.94m, and will take part in the decisive event. Lithuanian Vaclavas Kidykas (61.40m), 6th in the 1997 lists, and this year’s Central American and Caribbean Champion, and 7th performer of the season, Cuban Alexis Elizalde (61.48m) didn’t advance to the final.
