Overview by IAAF   oaka7
Faumuina lived dangerously before winning New Zealand’s first ever world title (or medal even). In the qualifying competition she faced a crisis after fouling her first two throws. She might have opted for a safety throw but there was no compromise as she registered a distance of 338 DOHA 2019 PAST RESULTS/WORLD CHAMPS WOMEN’S DT 64.58. In the final the same thing happened. Two fouls left her facing extinction and she needed over 61m to survive the cut. No problem ... despite, or maybe because of, the pressure she threw 66.82, which not only ensured her three more trials but won her the title. She had come a long way since Gothenburg where she failed to reach the final, placing 28th of the 33 entrants with 54.32. Defending champion Zvereva and Olympic silver medallist Sadova were unable to improve upon their second round efforts of 65.90 and 65.14 for the other medals.

Event report women discus throw final

New Zealand won its first gold medal of these championships but only after a little scare. The 1997 world leader, Beatrice Faumina fouled on her first 2 attempts, but in the 3rd round her toss of 66.82m was good enough to get the title. Defending champion Ellina Zvereva of Belarus threw 65.90 in the second round and that ensured the silver medal. Also in the second round, Russia’s Natalya Sadova clinched the third place with 65.14m. The only athletes who improved in the last 3 rounds were Russia’s Larisa Korotchevich, 4th at 63.02m, and Belarus’s Irina Yatchenko, with very colourful purple hair, 5th at 62.58. Faumina’s and Sadova’s marks are the shortest ever for 1st and 3rd places at the World Championships.
