Overview by IAAF   sevilla1
Defending champion Dvoák started brilliantly with his second fastest 100m and a long jump personal best, but he fell behind his correspondDOHA 2019 PAST RESULTS/WORLD CHAMPS MEN’S DECATHLON 209 ing world record marks in the shot, high jump and 400m to end the day with 4582 as against 4645 during his 8994 score the previous month. The revelation was Britain’s 21 year-old Macey, whose personal best had leapt in May from 7480 (when second in the 1996 World Juniors) to 8347. Finishing with a 46.72 400m, astonishing for a man whose best before May was 50.41, he achieved a first day score of 4546 (114 up on his previous highest) for second, ahead of Huffins 4462, Nool 4416 and Lobodin 4356. Dvoák increased his lead to 113 after a snappy hurdles but Macey was still on a roll as he improved to 14.36. Huffins overtook Macey for second following the discus, and despite overcoming a broken pole and yet raising his best to 4.60 the Briton was back to fourth after eight events. Dvoák, well below form in the vault, led with 7172 but Huffins was close at 7148, followed by Lobodin 7075 and Macey 7008. European Champion Nool failed his opening height. Dvoák scored big points in the javelin, while Macey – reduced to one attempt because of an elbow injury – threw a personal best. Scores after nine events: Dvoák 8063, Huffins 7951, Macey 7807, Lobodin 7785, Levicq 7758. Dvoák’s title was safe but the 1500 would decide the other medals. Macey produced yet another pb and jumped to second. Huffins held on to third ahead of Levicq who rose 10 places with an exceptional second day score of 4380, the highest ever such total at a World Championships.
These are the official results of the Men's Decathlon competition at the 1999 World Championships in Seville, Spain. There were a total number of 25 participating athletes, including nine non-finishers. The competition started on Tuesday August 24, 1999, and ended on Wednesday August 25, 1999.

 100 Metres

Decathlon, Men Day 1 - morning session

The Czech Thomas Dvorak, world record holder, started the combined event very strongly with the objective of retaining the world title he conquered in Athens. After the third of the first day's events he is 10 points behind his world record achieved in Prague this summer.
100m: Dvorak began the competition with a 10.60 which he achieved in the first heat, where he ranked second behind the American Chris Huffins, winner in the Panamerican Games held in Winnepeg this July. His 10.43 was the best mark of all participants. However, he was far from hiis pb of 10.22, the best time ever obtained in a decathlon. Among the other favourites, was a remarkable effort by Russian Lev Lobodin who improved his personal best by two hundredths of a second (10.80). Estonian Erki Nool, who is being informally advised by the former world record holder Daley Thompson (GBR), and the German Frank Busemann were far behind their personal bests.
Long jump: the second event stretched the lead of Dvorak thanks to the 7,98 that he achieved in his first attempt, bettering by 8 centimetres his personal best. European champion, Nool, in one of his strongest events, marked 7,85 in his second attempt, the second best of all participants. In the group A, the longest jump was for the Frenchman Levicq with 7,42, Lobodin's (RUS)7.40m was also  very close to his personal best. Shot put: Dvorak led again with the 16,49 that he achieved in his last throw. So after the shot discipline he stands 90 points ahead of the second ranked American champion Huffins, who threw 15,67. Erki Nool is ranked after him, even though he did not get close to his personal bests. German Frank Busemann, second in the Atlanta Olympic Games, didn't participate in this event forfeiting his right to continue.

Decathlon, Men Day 1 - evening session

The Decathlon's evening session narrowed the differences between the leaders. In second place behind Dvorak was, the British Dean Macey silver medallist in the last World Junior Championships, with two impressive performances which gave him 1987 points.

High jump: Dvorak maintained a difference of 90 points with the 2,00 that he jumped in his second attempt hoping to keep the 90 point lead over Huffins (USA) who jumped the same height. Dean Macey (GBR) remained contention for the medals sharing the best jump, 2.12m with the American Tom Pappas. Nool (EST), the European champion was in third position until this event and jumped 1.97m. 400m - Macey (GBR) was the winner of the fastest heat with 46.72, a major improvement in his previous PB of 47.49. Dvorak (CZE) suffered in the last few metres of the same heat to finish last with 48.42 secs. Lobodin (RUS) and Huffins (USA) both lost points, with the American losing second place. His time was 49.04secs more than one second below his best.

110 Metres Hurdles

Decathlon, Men Day 2 - morning session

110m hurdles: Dvorak, the world record holder, reaffirmed in this event his first place in the competition. He performed the best mark of all participants with 13.75. He was followed by American Huffins with 13.98, third in the classification until that moment, behind Dean Macey. The Briton improved his personal best by 13 hundredths of a second (14.35). However, this result allowed his rivals to shorten the gap. Estonian Nool and Russian Lobodin were very close to their personal bests. They are still in contention for the medals. Czech Thomas Sebrle (second in the world ranking this year) fell down in the first heat and wasn't able to finish the race. Discus: Dvorak performed the fourth best of the participants with 46,26. Lobodin with 47,04m (personal best) and Chris Huffins (49.48m) marked better throws. The American Steele was the best with 50,35; despite this, he is still far from the podium.

Pole Vault

Decathlon, Men Day 2 - evening session

The competition had an exciting end with five men in fight for the podium. The world record holder Thomas Dvorak (CZE) repeated his victory of Athens '97, while Dean Macey (GBR) secured a surprising silver medal in the last event. The American Chris Huffins was finally third after being in the first two places all over the event. Pole vault. There were no amazing performances excluding Sebastien Levicq (FRA) with 5,50. Even there were disappointments like the current European Champion Erki Nool (EST) with three fouls in his first height (5,10) which put him out of the fight for medals. The other man to jump over 5 metres was Lev Lobodin (RUS) whose 5,10 placed him by the moment in the podium. The Czech Dvorak jumped only 4,60 and his advantage over Huffins (4,80) lowered to 24 points. Javelin. Dvorak threw 70,11 and granted the gold medal, while Huffins (64,35) remained second.

The Estonian Nool reached 70,22, the best performance in the event, but already had no hopes. Macey (GBR) exploited the situation throwing 64,03 and taking again the third position while Lobodin threw only 58,13. 1500m. The silver and bronze medals were still to fight for. Huffins had advantage of 144 points over Macey, 166 over Lobodin and 193 over Levicq. Macey finished 2.50 behind Levicq and 24.52 ahead of Huffins. That way Macey won the silver medal leaving the American in third position. The Spaniard Benet had to leave the race only 250 metres away from home while defending the sixth position. An injury in the 110 hurdles prevented him from finishing the competition.
