1999 7th IAAF World Championships - Seville - Men's Marathon

Host City: Seville, Spain
Dates: August 20–29, 1999
Nations participating: 201
Athletes participating: 1821
    Main venue: Estadio Olímpico
Overview by IAAF   sevilla1
At 36 years and 308 days, Antón became the oldest IAAF World Championships gold medallist in a running event, and joined Abebe Bikila and Waldemar Cierpinski as the only marathon men to have won a second global title. Since outkicking his Spanish colleague Fiz for the world title in Athens, Antón had experienced his ups and downs: 4th in 1997 Fukuoka (2:10:27), 1st in 1998 London (personal best of 2:07:57), non-finisher 1998 New York, 3rd 1999 London (2:09:41). But on home soil in Seville (his first ever marathon in Spain) he was back to vintage form. Damaoui was about a minute clear of the main contenders at halfway in 67:24 only to be caught at 27 kilometres. Sato then built up a big lead by 35 kilometres ahead of Modica, Antón and Biwott. During the 38th kilometre, first Modica then Antón, dropped Biwott, and then Antón on his own spurted away in pursuit of Sato, whom he caught and passed approaching 39 kilometres. Covering the second half in an exceptional 65:10, he won by 27 seconds from Modica with Sato third. His time of 2:13:36 was impressively fast in the heat of the evening. Italy and Japan each had three men in the top ten, finishing in that order on aggregate times in the concurrent World Cup competition. This was the final world championship marathon in which no African placed in the top eight.

Men's Marathon

The Spaniard Abel Anton succesfully defended his world title to win with 2:13.36, becoming the first man to obtain two consecutive marathon victories at the World Championships. The race was paced in its first kilometres by the Moroccan Damaoui, who pushed to the front and took roughly a one minute lead. Half way through the race Gert Thys (RSA), the second world all-time performer, made the definite selection and Anton, Japan's Sato and Shimizu, and the Italians Modica and Goffi, were the only ones to respond. Sato attacked strongly and took the first place from Damaoui at the 26km point, taking the lead alone. The group behind him was formed of Biwott (KEN), Thys, Modica, Anton and the Portuguese Novo. The decisive moment of the race arrived around the 37km point. Anton changed his rhythm and chased the Japanese, who was caught two kilometres away from the Stadium. The Spaniard raced on alone to take the gold medal. Vincenzo Modica, bronze medallist in 1998's European Championships, came second, while Sato had took the bronze medal. Italy placed four men among the first twenty and won the World Cup by nations.
