Dates: August 20–29, 1999
Nations participating: 201
Athletes participating: 1821
    Main venue: Estadio Olímpico
Overview by IAAF   sevilla1
Sadova, the only thrower in the world to better 70m in 1999, will not look back on Seville with any pleasure. The 1997 bronze medallist only just scraped into the final in 12th place and eventually placed fourth. European Champion Dietzsch, who had not won a global medal since her silver in the 1986 World Junior Championships, dominated the contest. Her opener of 66.34 would have stood up as the winner had she not later improved to 67.60 and 68.14. After four rounds Sadova (64.98) was in second place but Grasu threw 65.35 in round 5 to supplant her, and a few minutes later the towering Kelesídou reached 66.05. Sadova was out of the medals.
These are the official results of the Women's Discus Throw event at the 1999 World Championships in Seville, Spain. There were a total number of 31 participating athletes, with the final held on Monday 23 August 1999.

Women's Discus Final

German Franka Dietzsch won her first world title in the Discus, which she dominated from her first attempt. The 1998 European champion opened with 66.34 (which would have been enough to win), and then improved it with 67.60 on her third throw and 68.14 on her fifth. The big battle here, was for the other medals. Greek Anastasia Kelesidou got the silver with a toss of 66.05 in the fifth round. Romanian Nicoleta Grasu took the bronze with 65.35, also on her fifth toss. Russian Natalya Sadova, the 1999 world leader with 70.02, was fourth with 64.98, while defending world champion, Beatrice Faumuina (NZL) was fifth with 64.62, a personal season's best.

Nicoletta Grasu (ROM), third in athlete in the world ranks for 1999, reached the final despite not achieved the qualification standard.
