Men's 110m Hurdles Final
USA's Allen JOHNSON won his third 110m hurdles world championships tonight in a world leading time of 13.04, edging out Cuba's Olympic champion Anier GARCIA in a blistering performance.
GARCIA ran his best time of the year, 13.07, but it wasn't quite enought to catch the flying American. Dudley DORIVAL, a former world junior silver medallist while running for USA, claimed Haiti's first ever world championships medal, clocking a new national record of 13.30 for the bronze.
After one false start, by the Cuban Yoel HERNANDEZ, JOHNSON got a fantastic start and was already ahead of GARCIA, one lane to his right, by the first hurdle. He cleared that cleanly, but proceeded to clatter seven of the remaining 10. Somehow he maintained his superb form and speed between the barriers. GARCIA began to gain on him by hurdle seven and was within half a stride at the final barrier, but could not close the gap in the final 10 metres.
JOHNSON dipped at the line, thrust his arm into the air and pointed at the sky in triumph. He then turned to look at the clock before shouting in joy and setting off on a victory lap.
JOHNSON, who has the third fastest time in history to his name, also won gold in 1995 and 1997, as well as the Olympic title in 1996. He joins Britain's Colin JACKSON as one of only two men to regain their 110m hurdles titles, and joins USA's Greg FOSTER as one of only two men to win the title three times (Foster won in 1983, 1987 and 1991).

110 metres Hurdles Semi-Final
Current Olympic champion Anier GARCIA (CUB) set a season's best 13.19 in his heat ahead of 1996 Olympic gold medallist Allen JOHNSON (USA)(13.27). JOHNSON is primed for his third world title but GARCIA's was the fastest time of the round, showing that he is in shape to add the world title to his Olympic gold.
The second heat started with the disqualification of Great Britain's Commonwealth gold medallist Tony JARRETT due to two false starts. Yevgeniy PECHONKIN of Russia was the eventual winner of the second heat in a personal best time of 13.38. Sweden's Olympic finalist Robert KRONBERG matched PECHONKIN's time to also advance to the final.
Yoel HERNANDEZ of Cuba ran his best time this season, 13.33. The battle for second place in the heat was won by Dudley DORIVAL of Haiti in a time of 13.43. Terrence TRAMMEL (USA) stumbled over four hurdles, yet regained his composure to finish third in 13.44.
The two fastest losers, who advance to the final, were South Africa's Shaun BOWNES and Dawane WALLACE (USA) in times of 13.29 and 13.41.
In a shock result, TRAMMELL, the Olympic silver medallist and current world indoor champion, failed to qualify for the final.

Men's 110m Hurdles - Round 1
Olympic champion Anier GARCIA (CUB) qualified fastest for the next round of the 110 hurdles with a heat win in 13.21, the third fastest time this year.
GARCIA led from the blocks in his heat to beat Mike FENNER (GER) who ran his season's best 13.46 and Videnov ZHIVKO (BUL) third in 13.59. The 1999 World Championship silver medallist also remained composed after three false starts, two by Damien GREAVES (GBR).
1996 Olympic champion Allen JOHNSON (USA) comfortably won the first heat in 13.59, scraping past former world junior champion Yoel HERNANDEZ(CUB), 13.63 and early leader Tony JARRETT (GBR) third in 13.64. Unusually, JOHNSON, with two world championship gold medals already, did not knock over any hurdles.
The other Cuban HERNANDEZ, Yuniel, ran 13.56 to win his heat despite one false start. Second was perennial finalist Florian SCHWARTHOFF (GER) in 13.58 and Robert KRONBERG (SWE) who led the field for much of the race to finish third in 13.59.
Terrence TRAMMELL (USA) also ran within himself to win heat five in 13.40 ahead of Yevgeniy PECHONKIN (RUS) who ran 13.58 and Jonathan NSENGA (BEL), third in 13.74.
American hopes in this event remain high after Dawane WALLACE won heat four in 13.28. Artur KOHUTEK (POL) was second 13.54 and Xiang LIU (CHN) ran 13.60 for third.
Dudley DORIVAL (HAI) ran a national record of 13.33 to win the final heat. Shaun BOWNES (RSA) ran 13.38 in second ahead of Elmar LICHTENEGGER (AUT) in 13.39, a season's best.
The fastest losers to progress to the next round were Jerome CREWS (GER) with 13.60, Masato NAITO (JAP) with 13.80 and Joseph- Berlioz RANDRIAMIHAJA (MAD) who ran a national record of 13.61. Peter COGHLAN (IRL) 13.57 and Mubarak MUBARAK ATAH (KSA), running 13.72, a national record, have also qualified.
