In windy conditions the early pace was slow (2:48.72 at 1000m) before Barmasai took up the running with three laps remaining. Six men were DOHA 2019 PAST RESULTS/WORLD CHAMPS MEN’S 3000mSC 143 in contention at the bell with the three Kenyans in front. Olympic Champion Kosgei proved to be the strongest of the trio, for Yator fell at the water jump while Barmasai was caught by Morocco’s Ali Ezzine on the run-in. “There will be more [from Kenya] who will do what I did today,” concluded Kosgei. |

3000 metres Steeplechase Final |
Kenya's Olympic gold medallist, Rueben KOSGEI, maintained his championship form by winning the world title in a time of 8:15.16. Ali EZZINE (MAR) fought his way into second position in the last sixty metres to steal the silver medal from world record holder Bernard BARMASAI (KEN) in times of 8:16.21 and 8:16.59 respectively.
In a race that saw the lead exchanged several times, all three Kenyan competitiors KOSGEI, BARMASAI and Raymond YATOR, current World Junior record holder, remained in the front of the pack throughout the race. KOSGEI made his move with 400 metres to go with his countrymen close behind him.
But, YATOR, whom many picked to win this race, fell at the last water jump and finished well back in a time of 8:20.87. KOSGEI maintained his composure and had plenty to spare. Behind him EZZINE and BARMASAI were locked in a desperate battle over the last 50 metres to determine the silver and bronze medals.
This is the sixth consecutive time that a Kenyan has won the world championship gold medal in this event but in all those years they have also won the silver medal. Can the rest of the world be closing in? |

3000m Steeplechase - 1st round |
The Kenyan contenders for the 3000m steeplechase have all safely qualified for the final while the Moroccan threat has weakened with Elarbi KHATTABI's failure to qualify for the final.
Olympic champion Rueben KOSGEI (KEN) won the first heat comfortably in 8:21.96 ahead of Brahim BOULAMI, 8:21.98, and the Spaniard Miguel Luis MARTIN, 8:25.09. BOULAMI is the fastest ever non-Kenyan with his best of 8:07.28.
KOSGEI led for most of the heat ahead of the leading group which included national record holder Eliseo MARTIN (ESP), fourth in 8:26.18, and medal hopeful Ali EZZINE (MAR), fifth in 8:28.86. EZZINE prevented a Kenyan clean sweep with bronze medals in the 1999 World Championships and the 2000 Olympics.
To the roar of the local crowd, Joel BOURGEOIS (CAN) qualified automatically in sixth place in 8:26.92, a season's best.
World Junior Champion and record holder Raymond YATOR (KEN) lost a shoe during the second heat but still qualified comfortably in 8:25.45. So too did world record holder Bernard BARMASAI (KEN), 8:25.65, although both finished behind Spanish national champion Antonio JIMENEZ who ran 8:25.37.
The Kenyan's took control of the heat but conceeded the race to JIMENEZ in the final straight.
Also qualifying from heat two were Saifeldin Abdullah KHAMIS (QAT), fourth in 8:25.83, Ralf ASSMUS (GER), fifth in 8:29.52, and Bouabdallah TAHRI (FRA) sixth in 8:29.71.
Olympic finalist from Sydney, Elarbi KHATTABI (MAR), struggled to stay with the lead pack in the last half of the race and finished eighth, therefore missing the final.
Tim BROE (USA) 8:27.26, Gael PENCREACH (FRA) 8:28.54 and Christian BELZ (SUI) in 8:31.57 qualified as the three fastest losers. |
