Overview by IAAF   EDMONTON STADIUM
Switzerland won their first World or Olympic track title through André Bucher, who ran a faultless race. Bungei provided a fast pace (24.73, 50.41), and was followed closely by Bucher and Yiampoy. The bespectacled Swiss then accelerated to lead at 600m (76.39). He pulled further clear and was never threatened. Bungei held on to the silver, and it looked as if Yiampoy might win the other medal for Kenya, but he was caught by Czapiewski. The Pole improved from seventh to third in the homestraight and covered the last 200m in 26.7 to Bucher’s 27.3.

These are the official results of the Men's 800 metres event at the 2001 IAAF World Championships in Edmonton, Canada. There were a total number of 37 participating athletes, with five qualifying heats, two semi-finals and the final held on Tuesday 7 August 2001 at 19:50h.

André Bucher came into this race having dominated these same competitors throughout the Golden League season. Bucher started hard but Wilfred Bungei pushed the break to take the lead past the bell in 50.41. As they hit the backstretch, Bucher set Bungei up and passed him with 300 metres to go. From there he just continued to pull away from Bungei, opening up over 5 metres by the finish line. The rest of the field strung out behind William Yiampoy the last pursuer. Paweł Czapiewski was dead last, 2 metres behind the back of the pack with 200 metres to go, still at the home straightaway, he had only passed Nils Schumann. Sprinting down the outside of lane 2, Czapiewski ran past the field passing Yiampoy with 12 metres to go, but too much distance to get to Bungei, Czapiewski took home bronze.

Men's 800m Final-800 m hommes finale
Andre BUCHER became only the second Swiss athlete ever to win a World Championships gold medal when he won the men's 800m final here this evening, running a flawless race to cross the line in triumph in 1:43.70.
The only other Swiss to win at the World Championships was shot putter Werner GUNTHOR who won three golds in 1987, 1991 and 1993.
The race was swift from the start, as BUCHER, starting in lane four, attempted to get to the front as soon as the athletes broke. He was prevented by the Kenyan Wilfred BUNGEI who forced his way through from the outside to lead the field at 200m, passed in 24.73.
Already eight runners were strung out behind him, as BUNGEI took them through the bell in 50.41, with BUCHER a metre behind and the Kenyan champion William YIAMPOY in third. South Africa's world silver medallist Hezekiel SEPENG was beginning to lose touch as they raced around the penultimate bend.
With 300m to go BUCHER made his move. BUNGEI tried to respond but the Swiss was too strong. He pulled away round the final bend and entered the home straight some three metres clear. BUNGEI could do nothing about it, but fought gallantly to hold on to the silver medal, crossing the line in 1:44.55.
Behind him YIAMPOY was fighting too, for the bronze, as SEPENG and Poland's Pawel CZAPIEWSKI made late charges to get into the medals. It was a battle the Pole won, snatching the bronze on the line with a personal best of 1:44.63, and leaving YIAMPOY medalless in fourth, 1:44.96. The Olympic champion, Nils SCHUMANN of Germany, was fifth in a season's best of 1:45.00.

Men's 800m semi-finals-800 m h. demi-finales
Andre BUCHER of Switzerland went into the men's 800 metre competition as the favourite to take the world championship gold medal, and the result of the semi-final did nothing to change that impression.
BUCHER, the fastest in the world this year and undefeated this season, cruised to an easy victory in the second heat with a time of 1:44.47. Willian YIAMPOY, one of Kenya's two hopes to regain the 800 metres championship they won in 1987, 1991 and 1993, finished second. YIAMPOY ran in second position for most of the race until BUCHER took the lead at 600 metres. Mbulaeni MULAUDZI (RSA) established a personal best time of 1:44.81 to finish third, with Poland's Payel CZAPIEWSKI also establishing a personal best at 1:44.89.
In the other heat, another Kenyan, Wilfred BUNGEI, set the pace early and never faltered, winning with a time of 1:45.66. Khalid TIGHAZOUINE (MAR) came in second at 1:45.69. Olympic champion NILS SCHUMANN (GER) who hasn't raced at any of the major events this season, erased some doubt about his fitness with a late surge to finish third with 1:45.86. Hezekiel SEPENG (RSA) took the fourth spot at 1:45.97.

Men's 800m - Round 1- 800 m h. 1er tour
A series of fast races kick started the first round of the men's 800m this afternoon in which Wilfred BUNGEI clocked the quickest time, 1:44.73.
The Kenyan was the only person to run under 1:45 as he won heat two from Poland's Pawel CZAPIEWSKI. The Netherlands' Bram SOM, one of the fastest men in the field this year, was left trailing in third and just qualified for tomorrow evening's semi-final as a fastest loser by virtue of his 1:45.60.
SOM was only one of a number of top athletes who were forced to work harder than they would have liked for their automatic qualification places.
In the first heat Olympic champion Nils SCHUMANN of Germany was in third place as he came off the bend. Only the first two in each heat were guaranteed to qualify automatically, and SCHUMANN had to squeeze past Arthemon HATUNGIMANA (BDI) on the inside as the athletes fought for places down the home straight. World silver medallist Hezekiel SEPENG of South Africa came through for second on the outside, but the Burundian still qualified as a fastest loser.
The world's fastest 800m runner this year, Andre BUCHER of Switzerland, also had to work hard in heat three. He won in 1:45.50 but the Moroccan Khalid TIGHAZOUINE pushed him hard, running a season's best of 1:45.63 in second.
In the one slow heat of the round Botswana's Otukile LEKOTE - a sub 1:45 man at his best - was run out of a qualifying spot after a six man sprint finish. The final heat - won by another Burundian athlete, Jean-Patrick NDUWIMANA in 1:45.13 - produced two personal bests for fastest qualifiers Marvin WATTS of Jamaica and Adem HECINI of Algeria.
