Olympic Champion Zió kowski and world leader Murofushi staged an exciting battle. First the Polish team captain led with 81.88, then his Japanese rival went ahead in round 2 with 82.46. That remained the longest effort until the end of round 5, when Zió kowski managed 83.38, a personal best and championship record. Murofushi – whose father Shigenobu was 10th in the 1972 Olympics – was next to throw and got near with 82.92. Neither man improved in the final round.
The final of the Men's Hammer Throw event at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada was held on Sunday August 5, 2001. There were a total number of 32 participating athletes. The qualifying rounds were staged on Saturday August 4, with the mark set at 79.50 metres.

Men's Hammer Throw-lancer marteau hommes
A magnificent 82.46 metre launch by Japanese record holder Koji MUROFUSHI in the second round of the men's hammer final seemed to have decided the gold medal. But a phenomenal fifth round saw Poland's Olympic champion Szymon ZIOLKOWSKI move to the top rung of the podium with a championship and national record of 83.38m, surpassing Sergy Litvinov's 83.06m from Rome in 1987.
The opening round was led by ZIOLKOWSKI with a massive opening throw of 81.88m. Just three throws before Russia's Olympic finalist Ilya KONOVALOV had been the first to cross 80 metres with 80.27m, which ultimately proved to be good enough for the bronze medal. Throwing last in round one was this season's world leader MUROFUSHI, and he immediately moved into third with 79.91m.
Neither ZIOLKOWSKI nor KONOVALOV could improve in the second round and it was then, with the tactical advantage of throwing last, that MUROFUSHI unleashed his 82.46m effort. Though way short of his season's leading throw, it was still good enough to give him a commanding lead.
In the third round Ukraine's Olympic finalist Andrey SKVARUK moved up to fourth, with 79.93m, and MUROFUSHI produced another substantial throw of 81.95m in what was fast becoming an impressive series.
With his fourth try the Pole produced a second effort over 80 metres (80.32m). But the event leader produced 81.43m and everything seemed to be over.
Nothing could have been further from the truth, however, as first ZIOLKOWSKI and then MUROFUSHI produced their longest throws of the day to turn it all upside down. ZIOLKOWSKI's effort was a staggering 83.36m, which drew wild applause from the crowd. It was a national record for the Pole and beat the world championships record of 83.06m which had stood since 1987.
Moments later MUROFUSHI stepped back into the circle and, after a very fluid release, the hammer landed just shy of the 83 metres line at 82.92m.
This time the competition was decided as, despite a further effort of 82.61m, MUROFUSHI could not find the extra distance required in the sixth and final round.
So ZIOLKOWSKI added the world title to his Olympic gold and, in the process, broke Germany's hold on the men's hammer title which had been won by Heinz WEISS and Karsten KOBBS respectively at the last two world championships.
MUROFUSHI's series - 79.91m, 82.46m, 81.95m, 81.43m, 82.92m, 82.61 - was the finest in world championships history.

Men's Hammer Throw - qualifying round
Poland's Olympic champion Szymon ZIOLKOWSKI led the qualifiers into tomorrow's final of the men's hammer.
Throwing in the first of two qualification pools, the Pole who also won the European Cup this season unleashed a mighty 81.85 metres with his second attempt. In the world this year only the Pole and another three throwers have thrown further than this mark.
The only other athlete to cross the high automatic qualification standard of 79.50m metres, was Hungary's 1996 Olympic champion Balazs KISS who threw 79.60m with his final attempt.
The only other two throwers to qualify from group "A" were this season's world leader Hungary's Adrian ANNUS (78.57m) and France's European Under 23 champion Nicolas FIGERE (79.09m).
Nobody in pool "B" went past the automatic mark. The third Hungarian, Tibor GESCEK the European champion, threw 79.29m with his second attempt to lead that group. Next came Finland's world junior record holder Olli-Pekka KARJALAINEN(78.82m, Andrey SKVARUK of the Ukraine (78.80m)and Ilya KONOVALOV(78.67m)who all proceeded to the final.
Olympic silver medallist Nicola VIZZONI of Italy (78.66m)was the next of the qualifiers and was followed by Japan's world leader Koji MUROFUSHI(78.06m. MUROFUSHI is this season's world leader with 83.47m and by contrast to the rest of his season, his throwing today was quite tentative.
Olympic bronze medallist Igor ASTAPKOVICH of Belarus (76.99m) and Poland's second string Maciej PALYSZKO(76.72m) were the last to make the top 12 final.
Germany's reigning champion Karsten KOBS did not start today because of a sick bug which is affecting the German team including shot putter Oliver-Sven BUDER who failed to qualify in his discipline this morning.
