As usual the qualifying round was on the morning of the first day, with the final eight-and-a-half hours later. There was a considerable change in fortunes between the two rounds. South African Janus Roberts “won” with 21.26 in the morning, but managed only 20.16 in the evening for last place. Conversely, the American duo of Godina and Nelson performed moderately in qualifying yet finished first and second in the final. Godina therefore won a third world gold, and did so with some style, reaching 21.87 and 21.80 in the first two rounds. He said he would celebrate by doing his laundry

Men' Shot Put Final - Lancer poids h. finale
USA's John GODINA won his third world shot put title this evening, defeating team-mate Adam NELSON and the Olympic champion Arsi HARJU of Finland in the highest quality shot put final ever.
A spectacular first round saw USA's world 1995 and 1997 GODINA take the final by the scruff of the neck, spinning the shot out to a commanding 21.87m. However, he was followed by another eight throwers who with their first attempts also crossed the 20m line! Yugoslavia's Dragan PERIC who threw season's best of 20.91m, Spain's European Cup winner Manuel MARTINEZ (20.78m) and Canadian champion Bradley SNYDER (20.63m) were the best of the chasing pack, which also included HARJU (20.28m) and world leader Janus ROBBERTS (20.12m).
GODINA continued in the same manner in round two with 21.80m and was followed by NELSON, the Olympic silver medallist who threw 20.86m to move up to third. In the same round BELONOG improved to 6th with 20.74m.
In the third round, producing his second personal best of the day (20.72m in qualifying), was Finnish champion Conny KARLSSON, who with 20.78m rose to fourth place. Yet the most surprising result was the elimination at this point of Commonwealth champion Janus ROBBERTS whose season's best of 21.97m is the world's leading mark.
HARJU, who had made sure of his last three throws with 20.59m, moved into second place with 20.93m in the fourth round. Only moments later NELSON moved the Finn back down to third taking second place himself with 21.24m. The leader, GODINA, who had fouled his third round throw, did the same with his fourth attempt. The only other major improvement in rounds three and four was BELONOG who twice put 20.83m to remain in sixth.
The final round was a very straight forward affair with no movement in the positions. HARJU put another solid performance of 20.79m, but had to settle for bronze, with NELSON in silver (21.24m) and GODINA the gold medallist thanks to his massive first round 21.87m.
GODINA's third world title matches the achievement of Switzerland's Werner Gunthor who won the gold in 1987, 1991 and 1993. Overall, the final was the highest quality ever as 20.45m was not good enough to qualify for the final three throws. The closest to this final in quality was the 1987 championships when 19.98m was goosd enough only for ninth place.
