Overview by IAAF   EDMONTON STADIUM
All eyes were looking to see if Devers could win a fourth title, but there was an upset in the final when another American, Kirkland, won the gold from lane 1. Devers had impressed most in the qualifying round, clocking a world-leading 12.56 in her semi. Kirkland had finished only third in the other semi in 12.80, hence the unfavoured draw in the following day’s final. In the first half of the final a third American, Adams, had the best start and she, Devers and Kirkland were placed first, second and third. Adams faded, Devers hit the eighth barrier and Shishigina came up with Dimitrova to contest the bronze. Meanwhile Kirkland ran a perfect race to complete a great double. In March she had won the world indoor title from lane 8.
These are the official results of the Women's 100 metres hurdles event at the 2001 IAAF World Championships in Edmonton, Canada.

Women's 100m Hurdles Final
World Indoor Champion Anjanette KIRKLAND of the USA upset the odds this afternoon to take gold in the final of the women's 100m hurdles. Running in lane one, KIRKLAND clocked a world's best time for 2001, 12.42, to beat her compatriot, the three-times world champion Gails DEVERS, and the Olympic champion Olga SHISHIGINA of Kazakhstan.
KIRKLAND is clearly happy running in outside lanes as she won the indoor title in Lisbon in March from lane eight. DEVERS, the pre-race favourite, took the silver here in her season's best time, 12.54, but almost certainly lost the gold when she clattered the eighth hurdle. SHISHIGINA's bronze, in 12.58 came thanks to a late surge in lane eight. Svetla DIMITROVA of Bulgaria had the same time in fourth place, with USA's Jenny ADAMS clocking a personal best 12.63 in fifth.
DEVERS, in lane six, and ADAMS, in lane four, were quickest from the gun and rose together at the first hurdle. Two-times European champion DIMITROVA was also away well and soon challenged DEVERS for the lead. By the fifth hurdle KIRKLAND was beginning to show on the inside, with ADAMS starting to fade as the Bulgarian came through.
DEVERS hit the eighth hurdle hard and worked hard to maintain her balance and form. She fought hard over the last two barriers but had lost too much speed to hold off the smooth-finishing KIRKLAND. DEVERS dipped at the line to ensure her silver, as SHISHIGINA stole the bronze from DIMITROVA on the line.
KIRKLAND's winning time puts her in eighth place on the world all-time list for this event.

Women's 100m hurdles semi finals
Gail DEVERS (USA) will start as favourite for the final of the women's 100m hurdles after running a world leading 12.56 to win semi final two. The other medal favourites have all qualified.
DEVERS again flew out of the blocks and apart from Linda FERGA (FRA) no other women threatened her lead. Olympic champion Olga SHISHIGINA (KAZ)was in a line of athletes behind DEVERS and was eventually third in 12.75. FERGA ran her personal best to finish second in 12.67. Dionne ROSE-HENLEY (JAM) also ran a personal best of 12.77 to finish fourth and qualify for the final.
Bridgette FOSTER (JAM) missed the final by one hundredth of a second, running 12.78 in fifth.
In semi final one, Jenny ADAMS (USA) and Svetla DIMITROVA (BUL) made a late charge to overcome early leader Perdita FELICIEN (CAN) and qualify in the top two places. DIMITROVA ran a season's best of 12.65 to beat ADAMS with 12.67, a personal best into a -0.8m/s headwind. Anjonette KIRKLAND (USA) was third in 12.80 and the final qualifier was Vonette DIXON (JAM) who ran 12.87. DIXON started well but could not match the finishing speed of DIMITROVA and ADAMS.
