Overview by IAAF   EDMONTON STADIUM
The winning time was the slowest yet, but the race was very exiting with three changes in the lead down the finishing straight. Breuer, contesting her fourth final, ran hard down the backstraight before Guevara entered the straight narrowly in front of the German and 1999 bronze medallist Fenton (née Graham). Breuer fell back and the Jamaican then edged ahead, by which time the lanky Senegalese Thiam had inched past Guevara. Fenton (lane 7) and Thiam (lane 4) appeared to be level, but on the line Thiam’s dip was 0.02 ahead. The 1997 and 1999 winner Cathy Freeman took the year off from competition.
These are the official results of the Women's 400 metres event at the 2001 IAAF World Championships in Edmonton, Canada.

Women's 400m final-400 m femmes finale
Amy Tiam MBACKE won the first ever medal for Senegal at a world championships when she beat Lorraine FENTON (JAM) and Ana GUEVERA (MEX) in the women's 400m final. In doing so she ran 49.86, a national record. FENTON and GUEVERA ran 49.88 and 49.97 respectively, both season's bests. The silver compliments FENTON's bronze from Seville in 1999.
Running from lane four, MBACKE followed Grit BREUER (GER)in lane five and FENTON for the first 200m of the race. At this stage, BREUER began to fall back and MBACKE closed in on the leaders.
With 100m remaining, MBACKE, whose previous honours include reaching the Olympic semi final and winning this year's Francophone Games, drew level with GUEVERA and FENTON.
It looked as though GUEVERA, a finalist in Sydney, would win as she led by one to two metres 70 metres out from the line, and only FENTON threatened her lead. With 20 metres left, FENTON drew level with the Mexican and it was not until the final five metres that MBACKE drew level and then passed the two minor medallists.
BREUER finished fourth in 50.49 ahead of Nadjina KALTOUMA (CHA, fifth in 50.80. The young Russian, Olesya ZYKINA, a European Junior champion, was sixth in 50.93 and Mireille NGUIMGO (CMR) was seventh in 51.97. Former world junior champion and Olympic bronze medallist Falailat OGUNKOYA (NIG) failed to finish.

Women's 400m semi-finals
The women's 400m semi-finals produced a pair of national records and a clutch of personal and season's bests for the qualifiers, with Amy MBACKE THIAM recording the fastest time of the round and looking like a strong candidate for the gold medal.
The Senegalese athlete smashed her own national record by more than half a second, clocking 50.21 to win the second of three heats, while the Calgary-based Chad runner, Kaltouma NADJINA also broke her own national record, to finish second in the same heat. NADJINA came from behind with a late surge to record 50.38, the third quickest of the day.
The second fastest time of the round went to Germany's former world champion Grit BREUER, who led from the start to win heat one in 50.32 from Olesya ZYKINA of Russia, who recorded 50.59. Behind these two, Cameroon's Mireille NGUIMGO came with a late finish for a season's best time of 50.71, only three hundredths of a second outside her personal best and good enough to put her into tomorrow evening's final as a fastest loser.
The third semi-final was won by Mexico's Olympic finallist Ana GUEVARA who looked comfortable for her victory, in 50.58. Jamaica's Olympic silver medallist finished strongly and, like NGUIMGO, came from behind in the home straight to claim a season's best, 50.61, and a place in the final.
The other fastest loser was Nigeria's African record holder Falilat OGUNKOYA, who was third in heat two in a season's best of 50.50.

Women's 400m Round 1-400 m f. 1er tour
Former world champion Grit BREUER of Germany produced the fastest time in the first round of the women's 400m this morning, clocking 50.71, one of only three sub-51 second times. The others went to Mexico's Olympic finallist Ana GUEVARA and Senegal's Amy MBACKE THIAM, who both ran 50.99 to win their heats.
Running in lane eight in the fifth of six heats BREUER - who is the fastest runner in the field this year - went out hard from the gun, chased by USA's Monique HENNEGAN and Britain's Olympic fourth placer Donna FRASER. These three led as the athletes came around the final turn, and BREUER cruised home in comfort. HENNEGAN was second, in a season's best of 51.12, but FRASER, who has had an injury-hit year, was pipped on the line by a fast finishing Karen SHINKINS of Ireland. She still qualified, however, her season's best 52.02 seeing her through as a fastest loser.
GUEVARA, who holds the world's third fastest time for 2001, also went out hard, followed by Russia's Anastasiya KAPACHINSKAYA. A personal best of 51.92 by Poland's Grazyna PROKOPEK saw her through as a fastest loser.
By contrast, MBACKE THIAM, running the final heat, preserved her energy through the first half of the race and came late, cruising from third to first place in the final 80 metres, with Cameroon's Mireille NGUIMGO running her season's best, 51.09, for second.
None of the main medal contenders had any problems in qualifying, with Chad's Calgary-based Kaltouma NADJINA - who will become a Canadian athlete after these world champoionships - and USA's Michelle COLLINS looking particularly easy. Olesya ZYKINA was also a comfortable winner of heat four in 51.57. However, Olympic silver medallist, Lorrane FENTON of Jamaica, started slowly and had to finish hard for second place in heat two, clocking a modest 51.80.
