Women's 400m Hurdles final
Morocco's Nezha BIDOUANE, the 1997 world champion, ran a perfectly time race to become the first woman ever to regain a world 400m hurdles title. BIDOUANE clocked the fastest time of the year, 53.34, to beat a field that included the reigning world champion and the 1996 Olympic champion by almost a second.
BIDOUANE, running in lane four, set off conservatively, while reigning champion and this year's world leader Dernia PERNIA of Cuba, one lane inside her, went away hard over the first 200m. Also going well was Russia's Yuliya NOSOVA, in lane five, and Jamaica's Debbie-Ann PARRIS in lane one. As they hit the turn, BIDOUANE began to turn it on, making up ground around the bend as PERNIA faded. The Moroccan took the lead two metres from home, passing between NOSOVA and PERNIA, and immediately put daylight between herself and her main challengers.
PARRIS was also fading in lane one, as NOSOVA came again in the closing stages. She was well down on BIDOUANE, however, and the Moroccan strode across the line before celebrating in style. She held her head in her hands, lay on her back and kicked her feet in the air, and screamed into the cool evening with joy and disbelief before setting off on her victory lap.
NOSOVA was second in 54.27, while PERNIA held on to the bronze in 54.51, just four hundredths ahead of USA's fast finishing Tonja BUFORD-BAILEY. The 1996 Olympic champion and Sydney Olympic silver medallist, Deon HEMMINGS of Jamaica, never showed at all and crossed the line in seventh.

Sydney Olympic semi-finalist, Yuliya NOSOVA (RUS)lead the women's 400m hurdles with the fastest qualifying time of the four heats in 54.43.
The first heat saw all the athletes run shoulder to shoulder over the last 100m with Olympic bronze medalist and '97 World Champion Nezha BIDOUANE (MAR) pulling away to win in 54.55. Debbie-Ann PARRIS (JAM) and Malgorzata PSKIT (POL) took the next two automatic qualifying spots in heat one with 54.81 and 55.45 respectively.
1996 Olympic bronze medalist, Tonja BUFORD-BAILEY (USA), 54.99, and the reigning European champion Ionela TIRLEA (ROM),55.41, followed NOSOVA to take the automatic qualifying positions in heat two.
Melanie Walker (JAM) took the early lead in heat three, but she was no match for defending world champion Daimi PERNIA (CUB) and three time USA champion, Sandra GLOVER (USA). GLOVER came up to win the heat in 55.38 over PERNIA's 55.40. Monika NIEDERSTATTER (ITA) ran in for the third automatic qualifying spot in 55.41.
The fourth heat produced the slowest times, which meant that only the top three were guaranteed through to the next round. Olympic gold (1996) and silver (2000) medalist Deon Hemmings (JAM) easily lead the field to a 55.39 win. Sinead DUDGEON (GBR) ran a season best time of 56.07, battling Brenda TAYLOR (USA - 56.28) to secure the two automatic qualifying spots in heat four.
With heat one producing the fastest times, all three non-automatic qualifiers from that heat advanced to the next round, with Yvonne HARRISON (PUR) setting a national record of 55.63 in the process. Karlene HAUGHTON (CAN) also advanced with a season best time of 55.94. Anna OLICHWIERCZUK (POL) also advanced with 55.98.
