2001 World Championships in Athletics Edmonton, Canada

2001 8th IAAF World Championships - Edmonton - Women's Heptathlon

Host City: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Dates: August 3–12, 2001
Nations participating: 189
Athletes participating: 1677
    Main venue: Commonwealth Stadium
Overview by IAAF   EDMONTON STADIUM
Heptathlon fans endured some disappointment in Edmonton, first with the scratching of Olympic Champion Denise Lewis then with the failure to finish of reigning World Champion Barber. Lewis withdrew on the eve of the event with a stomach disorder. Barber had a dream start to the contest with a 12.78 hurdles, one of the quickest heptathlon times ever. She followed up with a good 1.88 high jump and then, disaster. The Frenchwoman, now coached by Bobby Kersee, fouled three times in the shot put. Her final attempt went close to the 14m line, but she overbalanced and touched the ground in front of the ring with her hand. The event then developed into a duel between Sazanovich and Prokhorova, who had improved her high jump best by 5cm. Sazanovich’s 15.90 shot made her the post-Barber leader. The wind gauge malfunction on August 4 meant that none of heptathlon scores could count as records because there was no wind reading on the 200m races. However, Burrell’s 22.92 moved her up from 10th to fourth on the first day behind Sazanovich, Prokhorova and Roshchupkina. Prokhorova closed on the leader with a 6.61 long jump, and Burrell moved into third place with her personal best of 6.45. In the javelin Sazanovich threw a personal best of 46.72, but all her advantage vanished when Prokhorova produced successive pbs of 47.12, 50.57 and 50.73. As the Russian was a strong 800m runner and Sazanovich was not, Prokhorova could afford to stroll around the 800m in 2:11.53 to guarantee the gold. For the bronze, Burrell needed to stay near to Roshchupkina. She finished ahead of the Russian and so the medal order was clear before the final scores were confirmed.
These are the official results of the Women's Heptathlon competition at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. There were a total number of 18 participating athletes, including two non-finishers and one non-starter. The competition started on Saturday August 4, 2001 and ended on Sunday August 5, 2001.

 100 Metres Hurdles

Women's Heptathlon - Day 1, morning session
100m hurdles and high jump -
Reigning world champion Eunice BARBER (FRA) blazed to a huge personal best of 12.78 in the 100m hurdles, the first event of the women’s heptathlon. BARBER’s result also shattered the old heptathlon World Championship best of 12.85, set by Svetla Dimitrova in 1993. With Britain’s Olympic champion Denise LEWIS not starting the event due to an injury, BARBER is now the lone favourite to win here.
Judging by the level of women’s hurdles this year, BARBER’s 12.78 might have been fast enough for a medal in the individual event. The Frenchwoman also topped the high jump with 1.88m, the same result as Russia's Yelena PROKHOROVA, who bettered her personal best by 6cm in the event. Currently in second place overall, she is now definitely in the hunt for the medals.
In third place after two events is Karin ERTLE (GER) who produced fairly even performances in both events, 13.56 in the hurdles and 1.85m in the high jump. One of the medal candidates, Natalya SAZANOVICH (BLR) had a fine start, hurdling to 13.29, only 0.01 outside her personal best which she set earlier this year. However, the Belarussian could only high jump 1.76m, far below her usual heights in that event.
Shelia BURRELL (USA) producing a personal best of 13.05 in the first event but, as expected, fell way behind the leaders after the high jump.
Finland's Tiia HAUTALA, starting her first heptathlon of the year after being injured for much of the season, produced a season's best in both events. She is currently in fifth place. Natalya ROSCHUPKINA (RUS) has started slowly, only recording 14.12 in the hurdles and 1.79m in the high jump. DeDee NATHAN (USA) - usually in the top eight in major championships - was also in trouble in the first events, and stands only in 13th place.

200 Metres

Women's Heptathlon - after 4 events
The third event of heptathlon, the shot put, produced the biggest shock of these World Championships. With Denise LEWIS (GBR) unable to start because of a stomach ailment, Eunice BARBER (FRA) easily seemed the certain favourite. However, with the shot put being the weakest of her seven events, she failed to get a result on any of her three attempts. Despite having fouled her opening two throws, BARBER put everything into her third and final attempt, but couldn't manage to stay inside the circle. Even a low result would've been enough for her to stay ahead in the heptathlon battle.
With the two favourites out of the competition, Yelena PROKHOROVA (RUS) and Natalya SAZANOVICH (BLR) have suddenly become the most likely candidates as world champion. PROKHOROVA came back with a 13.15m effort in the shot put after her personal best in high jump (1.82m). SAZANOVICH went out early in the high jump (1.76m), but produced a massive shot put: 15.90m. Austra SKUJYTE (LTU) was the best putter of the field throwing 16.06m.
SAZANOVICH was leading the competition with 2930 points after the drama of the third event with PROKHOROVA on second with 2828 points and Karin ERTL (GER) just one point behind.
In the 200m, the fourth and last event today, Shelia BURRELL (USA) was the fastest with a huge personal best 22.92. However, the wind reading was not available for this race. The American's great performance was enough to put her in fourth place overnight. Natalya ROSHCHUPKINA also running well with 23.41secs gained 45 points in the winning battle against Natalya SAZANOVICH (23.87). The Belarussian is now leading - 3923pts - by 88 points from Yelena PROKHROVA (3835 pts), with ROSHCHUPKINA (3808pts) in third place, only 27 points behind her fellow Russian.
SAZANOVICH will be in trouble tomorrow trying to keep her lead as both Russians have previously had stronger second days than her. Yelena PROKHOROVA is now the clear favourite to win as using the second day score of her best heptathlon this year, she would end up with 6655 points, Natalya ROSHCHUPKINA would be second with 6497 and Natalya SAZANOVICH third scoring 6463 points.

Javelin Throw

Women's Heptathlon - after 6 events
Yelena PROKHROVA (RUS) completed a great morning session in the women’s heptathlon. In the first event of the second day she jumped 6.61m, only 11cm shorter than her personal best, which she set last year.
However Natalya SAZANOVICH (BLR), who was leading after day one, also jumped well, 6.50m, and was still in first place overall after the long jump.
The biggest surprise of the first day, apart from the failure of defending champion Eunice BARBER to get a result in the shot put, was the good form of Shelia BURRELL (USA). This continued in the long jump where BURRELL recorded 6.45m, only one centimetre less than her best jump ever.
In the sixth event, the javelin throw, both the main contenders recorded personal bests with their first attempts. SAZANOVICH threw 46.72m to keep her lead in the competition. PROKHOROVA, already with a huge personal best in the high jump yesterday, also bettered her pb in this event, by over two metres, to 47.12m.
However, it was the Russian's second throw which cleared things up. She made a new improvement of another three and a half metres to 50.57m, moving ahead of SAZANOVICH overall. PROKHOROVA was not done here yet, however, and improved again to 50.73m with her third attempt.
In the other javelin group Shelia BURRELL continued her good series. She produced a 48.74m javelin throw, less than two metres from her personal best.
Yelena PROKHOROVA, now with 5752 points, has a lead of only 25 points over Natalya SAZANOVICH (5727), which represents less than two seconds in the 800m, the last event. The gold should be her's, however, as SAZANOVICH is not even to close to the Russian's level over two laps. PROKHOROVA has already recorded a time of 2:05.00 this year and SAZANOVICH usually runs times between 2:15 and 2:20.
BURRELL, now in third place with 5568 points, should be confident about winning a medal as Karin ERTL (GER), with 5440, is some 128 points behind.

800 Metres

Women's heptathlon - Heptathlon femmes
Yelena PROKHOROVA (RUS), easily took the World Championship gold medal in this event after leading the competition through six events. Without having to push herself to the limit, PROKHOROVA comfortably ran the 800m in a very good time of 2:11.53. Her final total of 6694 points, would have given defending champion Eunice BARBER (FRA),all she could handle even at full strength. BARBER who fouled out in the shot put did not finish the heptathlon.
Natalya SAZANOVICH (BLR) never really mounted a challenge after virtually securing the silver medal just before the 800m. The Belarussian finished the competition with 6539 points, a seasonal best for her.
Clearly in third place before the last event, Shelia BURRELL (USA) finished in second place in the 800m with 2:14.24 to achieve her personal best of 6472 points an improvement of 50 points. More importantly, that was enough for the bronze medal. There was a long gap to next place, as Natalya ROSHCHUPKINA (RUS) finished fourth with 6294 points, some 178 points behind the bronze medalist.
With Olympic champion Denise LEWIS (GBR) missing due to injury and BARBER dropping finishing the competition, apart from the first three, the level of competition was lowest in World Championship history. Eighth place here was 6010 points, whereas, in Tokyo ten years ago that would have ranked merely 16th. PROKHOROVA, already the Olympic silver medalist at Sydney last year has now added the World Championship to her resume. With her reputation for a strong second day the outcome was never really in doubt.
