Overview by IAAF |
Of the four women who cleared 1.97, Cloete and Bergqvist had perfect records. At 2.00, Bergqvist (and Veneva) went out. Defending champion Babakova and Cloete failed once, then in the second round the Ukrainian cleared. Cloete also succeeded, meaning that Babakova would need to go higher in order to retain her title. In fact both failed at 2.02, so Cloete became the first South African woman to win any World Championship medal. “South Africa saved the best until last” said Cloete, reflecting on a day when her country also collected an unexpected silver (later promoted to gold) in the men’s 4x100m relay. |
These are the results of the Women's High Jump event at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. |

Women's High Jump Final |
South Africas’s Hestrie CLOETE won the women’s high jump gold this afternoon at the end of a competition in which all the medals were decided at one height.
Coming in to the competition, CLOETE had won the last Grand Prix meeting at London and had maintained her best level during the last few weeks. Despite being the only favourite in the final not able to clear 2.00m this year, CLOETE started the competition well. The South African went over all heights until 1.97m with her first attempts. Finally, CLOETE’s second attempt clearance over 2.00m was enough to give her the gold medal
The competition started quite slowly. There were many failures at the early heights with one of the favourites, the world leader Venelina VENEVA (BUL) only clearing 1.94m with her third attempt. The next height of 1.97m started to give us an idea of the medallists. World indoor champion Kajsa BERGQVIST (SWE) and CLOETE cleared with their first attempts to share the lead. Inga BABAKOVA (UKR) and VENEVA cleared with their seconds attempts, BABAKOVA going into third place and VENEVA fourth.
BABAKOVA, the reigning world champion, but only 5th in the Olympics last year, was the first one to go over 2.00m with her second attempt. BERGQVIST had already been very close to going over the bar, but it was CLOETE who cleared next and she moved to the top of the competition because of BABAKOVA’s failures in earlier heights.
VENEVA missed her two first attempts badly, but came close to a clearance with her third, while BERGQVIST missed three times, leaving only two women in the competition. BERGQVIST took the bronze medal due to her clean sheet before 2.00m.
CLOETE and BABAKOVA went on to try 2.02m, but never looked close to clearing. |

Women's High Jump Qualifying |
The elimination of Russia’s Olympic champion Yelena YELESINA was the shock of this qualification round. Overall none of the qualifiers proceeded to the final with the automatic qualification mark of 1.93m. In fact a low 1.88m was good enough for two of the 12 qualifiers.
Across the two groups four women finished the preliminary round with clean jumping cards, all having cleared 1.80, 1.85, 1.88 and 1.91m to qualify smoothly. These were, in Group A, joint first placers, Olympic finallist Vita PALAMAR of the Ukraine and South Africa’s Hestrie CLOETE, the Olympic silver medallist. In Group B, again jointly in the lead, were American champion Amy Acuff and Ukraine’s Inga BABAKOVA, the world defending champion.
Others to proceed to the final via clearances at 1.91m were Venelina VENEVA of Bulgaria, the current world leader (2.04m), Russia’s Yelena GULYAYEVA, Romania’s Monica IAGER-DINESCU and Sweden’s world indoor champion Kajsa BERGQVIST. These four were the last to proceed from the first pool.
Italian champion Antonietta DI MARTINO and Romania’s Oana PANTELIMON also went over at 1.91m. Joining them in the final were Hungary’s Dora GYORFFY and Croatia’s Blanka VLASIC who jumped 1.88m. By virtue of a better jumping record at earlier heights these two put out of the final both the European Cup winner Susan JONES (GBR) and YELESINA. |
