Three-time winner Kumbernuss slumped to sixth place while Korolchik, a surprise Olympic Champion in 2000, was completely dominant. Her qualifying throw (19.87) alone was longer than anyone else could manage in the entire competition, and in the final she put 20.61 in the third. Kleinert-Schmitt, wearing black and red hair, repeated her 1999 silver. She let out a squeal of delight after her final put which landed at a personal best of 19.86. The medal positions were unchanged after round 2 and the bronze went to Athens silver medallist Pavlysh.
The Women's Shot Put event at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada was held on Sunday August 5, 2001. There were a total number of 20 participating athletes, with the qualification mark set at 18.40 metres.

Women's shot put final
Olympic champion Yanina KOROLCHIK dominated today's women's shot final with a single throw that proved to be in another realm from the rest of the marks in this uneventful competition.
German champion Nadine KLEINERT-SCHMITT was the early leader with a first round effort of 19.54m. Both Olympic champion Yanina KOROLCHIK (BLR) and Larisa PELESHENKO (RUS), the Olympic silver medallist, fouled their openers.
KOROLCHIK took the lead in the second round with 19.71m. Reigning world champion Astrid KUMBERNUSS (GER), who has won this title on the last three occasions, was in sixth place at this point with her second attempt of 19.02m.
Then in the third round KOROLCHIK showed the other competitors that she was Olympic champion in more than just name, bettering her previous personal best and national record (20.56m) with a throw which landed at 20.61m. Her previous best had been set when winning the Sydney Olympic title last summer and to repeat the achievement in today's final was proof positive of her major championship temperament. Also in the third round, Vita PAVLYSH (UKR) moved into third place (19.41m), with PELESHENKO producing 19.37m for fourth.
So at the half way stage the order was KOROLCHIK, KLEINERT-SCHMITT and PAVLYSH and that's the way the positions stayed.
KUMBERNUSS increased her best to 19.25m in the fifth round but this was still only good enough for 6th place. PELESHENKO also put together a consistent series with another two marks over 19.30m in rounds four and five to consolidate her best of 19.37m.
In the sixth and final round KLEINERT-SCHMITT ended a top and tail performance with her final 19.86m bettering her opening 19.54m, but this was still far away from KOROLCHIK's now unassailable 20.61m which was the only class act of the afternoon.
So the KORLOCHIK added the World title to her Olympic gold in a competition which lacked that necessary magic ingredient, as no one, not even the winner herself was able to produce another throw in that same class. It was also sad to see defending champion and one of the all-time greats of this event Astrid KUMBERNUSS so obviously off her top form in sixth place.

Women's Shot qualification - Poids f. qual.
Today's preliminary round, with an automatic qualification standard of 18.40m, was a very straight forward affair.
Ten throwers qualified by right with only the last two places for the final filled by athletes who had not made the automatic grade.
Heading the qualifiers was Olympic champion Yanina KOROLCHIK of Belarus with a first round 19.87m to lead goup "A". The only other thrower over 19 metres was German champion Nadine KLEINERT-SCHMITT who topped group "B" with 19.35m but needed two attempts.
Russia's Irina KORZHANENKO (18.96m)and Ukraine's Vita PAVLYSH (18.68m)were the next best overall, each just taking one attempt.
This season's world leader, Russia's Larisa PELESHENKO, who established that mark (20.79m) when winning the Russian Championships on 13th July, was the fifth best thrower this morning with 18.65m, again on her first try.
Cuba's Yumileidi CUMBA (18.64m)and Russia's Svetlana KRIVELYOVA
(18.47m)also proceeded straight to the final on one try.
Fundamentally, there really was nothing to separate all the ten automatic qualifiers, as everyone made the 18.40m grade with ease. However the 7th and 8th best qualifiers, Germany's Astrid KUMBERNUSS (18.54m) and Poland's Krystyana ZABAWSKA (18.48m), showed some hesitation with two and three attempts being necessary for qualification.
Astrid KUMBERNUSS is of course the reigning three time world champion and despite her low season's form, her presence in the final will be sure to worry women like PELESHENKO and KOROLCHIK who lead this season's world rankings.
The final two qualifiers were Brazil's Elisangela ADRIANO (18.11m) and the Netherlands' Lieja KOEMAN (17.93m).
