Women Discus Throw Final

It was Belarussia's night at the Stade de France, as Irina YATCHENKO joined her teammate Ivan Tikhon, gold medallist in the men's Hammer, on the winner's podium.

The 37-year-old, who won bronze at the Sydney Olympics, and was competing at her sixth World Championships, finally found success with a winning throw in the first round. Her Discus sailed out to a season's best 67.32m.

"My first throw today has been my best one for years. It was only one metre under my personal best," she said.

She led the entire competition, the only threat coming in the final round from Anastasia KELESIDOU (GRE), who won silver.

Always one step behind the Belarussian, Kelisidou recorded a mighty final throw of 67.14m, also a season's best, but fell short by 18cm.

Greek's national champion, Ekterini VOGGOLI, took the bronze medal, recording two personal bests to finish with a distance of 66.73m, nearly a two metre improvement on her previous best.

Ukraine's Olena ANTONOVA (65.90m), Czech Republic's Vera POSPISILOVA (65.55m) and Russia's reigning World Champion Natalya SADOVA (65.22m) all followed closely behind to finish fourth, fifth and sixth repectively. Sadova was under pressure on her last attempt, but fouled for a third time to lose all hope of defending her title.

Women Discus Throw Qualifying

The women's Discus qualifying round resembled a training session this evening as eleven competitors eased into the final by throwing over 60.00 metres to automatically qualify for Monday's Final.

Defending World champion Natalya Sadova (RUS) showed she won't be giving up her title easily, with an opening throw of 63.47m to go into the Final as the number one qualifier and clear cut favourite.

In front of a partisan crowd, it was a dream start for the youngest in the field, French record holder Melina Robert-Michon, throwing 60.47m to qualify on her second attempt.

China's only discus thrower, Aimin Song, in career best form, breezed into the Final with an effortless first attempt of 62.20m.

The second-best thrower this year, Vera Pospisilova (CZE) did just enough to cement her finals spot, throwing 60,64 metres, also with her first attempt.

In a shock elimination, Germany's national champion, Franka Dietsch, who, after fouling the first attempt, bungled the second with 22.13m and under pressure on her final throw, recorded 59.77.

The batle for the twelth and final spot in the Final came down to a nail biting wait for the conclusion of the Group B qualifiers, which saw Dietsch edged out of the competition by Portugal's Teresa Machado by just 10 centimetres.
