Moreno became the only athlete to retain a throws title from Edmonton, though she needed three attempts just to qualify for the final. Once there, the 22 year-old Cuban took an immediate lead at 71.02, then went on to dominate the contest with throws of 73.33 and 72.52. Kuzenkova scored a third successive silver. The crowd were greatly relieved that Montebrun moved from fifth to third in round four. Less satisfied was Gu, who became the first woman to throw 70m and not win a medal. |
These are the official results of the Women's Hammer Throw event at the 2003 World Championships in Paris, France. There were a total number of 44 participating athletes, with the final held on Thursday 28 August 2003. |

Event Report Women Hammer Throw Final
The women's Hammer Throw, one of the finals most eagerly awaited by the French crowd, didn't turn out as they were hoping.
The French gold medal hope Manuela MONTEBURN had qualified easily, with the best mark of all finallists, 71.36m, so a win was more or less anticipated by the audience in the stadium. However, even the first round already showed that the final is not quite like a qualifying competition, and the enormous pressure on the young world number three started to show. Montebrun only managed to throw 69.38m in the first round with the crowd roaring wildly. The defending World Champion from Edmonton 2001, Yipsi MORENO (CUB), also the world leader this season with 75.14m, took control of the competition right from the start. The Cuban unleashed her hammer to land over the 70m line, at 71.02m, and was leading clearly after round one. Susanne KEIL (GER) was in second place with her 69.43m and Montebrun third (69.38m). There were many changes at the top of the rankings in the second round. First the Chinese GU Yuan, the 2002 World Cup winner and Asian record holder at 71.10m, moved into second place throwing 69.66m. Gu, who was injured in a competition in April, was only competing in her second final of the season. Olga KUZENKOVA (RUS), the 2002 European Champion and second in the world list this season, moved to second place with 71.14m. However, it was again the Cuban Moreno, who stole the show. Moreno's 73.33m made sure than the others were not going to catch her. Montebrun continued her average throwing of below 70m in round three, but Gu was able to better her mark by throwing 70.77m, her second best result all-time. Moreno again got well over 70m with 72.52m, but after this throw it was clear that she had used all of her energy in the competition and was not going to better her result in the last three rounds. In the fourth round the French crowd finally got what it had been waiting for. Montebrun got closer to her own level, going 15 centimetres clear of the Chinese to grab the bronze medal with 70.92m. Kuzenkova secured her silver medal during the same round with 71.71m. After this throw all the athletes started to lose technique and many fouled attempts resulted. No one improved intì the last two rounds and there was only one throw over 70m, Kuzenkova's 70.73m in round five. In winning Moreno has added a second successive World Championship to her account. Kuzenkova took the silver with 71.71m and Montebrun just edged the Chinese Gu Yuan by 15cm, 70.92m to 70.77m.

Event Report Women Hammer Throw Qualification
She came, she threw, she qualified. In her first throw, Manuel MONTEBRUN raised French hopes for a medal with an effortless 71.36m, the furthest distance of any woman in the qualifying round of the women's Hammer Throw. Montebrun wasted no time in starting her throw and seemed to have something in reserve, indicating that she must be one of the favourites for the final. What followed was a long series of throws short of the yellow line which marks the automatic qualifying distance for the final. This season the qualifying distance of 68.50m has been passed 26 times but today only three women managed that and the 12th place qualifier, GU Yuan (CHN) got through with 66.02m. The women who were expected to challenge the French champion are world leader Yipsi MORENO (CUB), Olga KUZENKOVA (RUS), Irina SEKACHOVA (UKR), Kamila SKOLIMOWSKA (POL) and Susanne KEIL (GER). Defending champion Moreno, waited until her third attempt to throw 70.91m, while Kuzenkova's best effort was 69.53m. Sekachova will not play a part in the final after reaching only 61.23m to finish 33rd. Keil was one of many athletes who threw well under their best but still qualified with 66.30m while Skolimowska was marginally better with 66.38m World record holder Mihaela MELINTE of Romania could only manage 67.27m but will still fight for a medal. Edmonton bronze medallist Bronwyn EAGLES missed the final with her best effort only 64.97m. There will be two Germans as Betty HEIDLER also qualified and two Americans, Anna MAHON and Melissa PRICE. Lorraine SHAW (GBR) will contest her third World Championship final while Candice SCOTT (TRI) is in her first.
