Athletes participating: 1,978

Overview by IAAF
A record 16 attained made the automatic qualifying height of 1.94, which led to a long final. Rather than being detrimental to the quality of the event, this appeared to enhance it. All athletes cleared at least 1.90, and a record five jumpers made 2.00, with three over 2.03 for the first time in one competition. Both defending champion Bergqvist and European Champion Hellebaut performed below expectations, but three of the top five equalled or set personal bests. The 1.69 tall Di Martino not only outjumped Olympic Champion Slesarenko for a share of the silver but with her 2.03 set a world women’s “differential” high jump best of 34cm above her height. With the bar at 2.05, Vlaši was in gold medal position, having been faultless to that height, while Chicherova and Di Martino had identical records. The Russian and Italian could not clear 2.05 and so shared the silver medal, while the 1.93 tall Croatian went over 2.05 at her final attempt.
