Overview by IAAF | |||
Lebedeva was the favourite, having jumped 15.14 earlier in the season, though both Devetzí and Savigne were threats, the latter having jumped 15.09 before Osaka, while Devetzí produced that same distance to lead the qualifying round. The consistent Greek began the final with 15.04, but was quickly overtaken by Savigne who moved to sixth all-time with 15.28. Lebedeva began with 14.75, 14.79 and 14.78, before spanning 15.07 in the fifth round. While Savigne and Devetzí were unable to get beyond 14.75 after round one, Lebedeva produced her fifth jump of the day at that level with her final effort of 15.01. However, the champion from 2001 and 2003 could never quite get on terms with the fluid Cuban. Devetzí went on to duplicate her Osaka bronze at the Beijing Olympics, but in September 2016 it was established that a re-test of her doping sample from the 2007 World Championships had proved positive. She was given a four-year suspension and all her results between and including the 2007 and 2009 World Championships were annulled. In November 2016 Devetzí was formally stripped of her Olympic medal by the IOC. They reported that a further reanalysis of her samples from Beijing 2008 resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substance stanozolol. Pyatykh therefore repeated her Helsinki bronze ... but only for 13 months, because in October 2017 a retest of her own Osaka doping sample confirmed the presence of a steroid | |||
