Overview by IAAF
Brown – who had placed fourth in Helsinki 2005, Osaka 2007 and Beijing 2008 – led at halfway in 21.31, a metre ahead of Wariner, with Merritt a further metre back. Merritt burned the third 100 in 10.83 seconds, and led by inches from Wariner at 300m, with Brown beginning to flag, and the rest 5m further back. As in Beijing, Merritt went away from Wariner in the last 100m, though less decisively. Behind the top two, Quow finished much faster than the rest, moving from seventh to third in the last 100m which he covered in the same time (11.70) as his first. Brown surrendered fourth place on the line to Henry. Though this race was absorbing, it was clear that standards fell in 2009, with no-one breaking 44 seconds for the event for the first time since 2004.
