Overview by IAAF
Defending champion Defar was fastest in the heats, which eliminated just seven runners. The pace in the final was slow, with Cheruiyot leading at 3000m in 9:15.05. Little was done in the fourth kilometre (3:00.74), which in ordinary circumstances would have been playing into the hands of fast-finishing Defar. Cheruiyot increased the pace in the penultimate lap (67.9), but there were still six in with a chance of gold as the bell sounded. Cheruiyot, Defar and Kibet pulled away from the others in the back straight, and Defar went into the lead with 150m to go but could not get clear. Cheruiyot reacted and edged ahead with 40m remaining, then the Ethiopian gave up and was also passed by Kibet. Cheruiyot and Kibet ran their last 400s in 58.62 and 58.76 respectively. It was later discovered that the Ethiopian was running in Berlin with respiratory problems, though she also managed a sub-59 last lap. “After Masai won the 10K race, she encouraged me to be self-confident,” said her friend Cheruiyot. “She was my biggest inspiration.”
