Ennis, world leader with 6587, quickly put her stamp on the competition with a run of 12.93 in the hurdles, to take a lead of 76 points over Djimou’s 13.44. This was the closest that anyone would get to the 24 year-old Briton. Despite measuring only 1.64, Ennis won the high jump, clearing 1.92. Olympic Champion Dobrynska won the shot with 15.82 to move into second spot (5932), as Ennis produced her one personal best of the competition – 14.14 – to keep the lead at 138. Ennis was again best in the 200 with 23.25, and led Dobrynska overnight by 307 points, with Oeser (3814) leading a cast of five within 60 points of the Ukrainian. Chudzik had the best long jump with 6.55, as Oeser (6.42) and Dobrynska (6.41) both jumped further than Ennis (6.29). Chudzik moved into second (5628) with a javelin throw of 48.72, 37 points ahead of Oeser, while Ennis’s 43.54 kept her 171 points ahead. Oeser pleased the crowd by beating Chudzik 2:14.34 to 2:18.58, overtaking the Pole for the silver medal with a personal best 6493, while Ennis beat them both with 2:12.22 to win by 238 points in a lifetime best of 6731.
