Overview by IAAF
Anticipation was high for a great clash after Friedrich had jumped 2.06 in the Golden League meeting in the Olympic Stadium in June to defeat reigning champion Vlaši. In World Championship final two months later, the medals were sorted out at 2.02. Chicherova, who had cleared 1.99 easily, then made 2.02 with her first jump, though she caught the bar with her thigh on the way down. Vlaši went on at her second attempt, which left Friedrich in third place. Concentrating on her final jump, she lifted her index finger to her mouth gesturing for less noise, and 50,000 people – who had just seen Usain Bolt break the world 200m record – went completely silent. The eerie moment of athletics magic was shattered by the roar as Friedrich cleared to cement the bronze medal position ahead of Di Martino and Beitia. Vlaši won by being the only one succeed at 2.04, though Friedrich narrowly failed (“only by the breadth of a hair”) at 2.06 (after two misses at 2.04). Chicherova (initially) won her second consecutive silver medal, her fourth successive placing in the top six. After the championships Vlaši improved to 2.08, and second place on the all-time list. More than seven years later, the IOC announced that Chicherova had been stripped of the bronze medal she won at the 2008 Olympics. A re-analysis of her sample from then resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substance dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol). Fifteen months later the AIU confirmed that all Chicherova’s results between the Augusts of 2008 and 2010 were to be disqualified, so Friedrich and Di Martino got podium upgrades. Chicherova’s compatriot Slesarenko was another finalist to be doping-disqualified.
