Overview by IAAF
Isinbaeva had won seven global titles since losing at the 2003 World Championships. In qualifying she had a huge clearance at 4.55 which appeared to be worth 5m+, but in the final her bubble burst. Despite clearing 4.70 in warm-up, she failed at her opening height of 4.75, at which point only four other jumpers were still in the competition. Pyrek and Johnson, faultless to that height, shared the lead, with Rogowska (one failure) ahead of Spiegelburg. When Rogowska cleared 4.75 first time to take the lead, Isinbaeva moved to 4.80, which, shockingly, she missed twice. Johnson – daughter of 1972 Olympic bronze medallist Jan Johnson – shared the silver with Pyrek, who placed in the top four for the fifth time. Isinbaeva afterwards stated that her “mind was absent,” but “I do not regret I did not start at lower heights because even if I cleared 4.65 it would mean nothing.” The following week in Zürich, Isinbaeva broke her world record with 5.06.
