Dates: 27 August – 4 September 2011

Athletes participating: 1848
  Main venue: Daegu Stadium
Overview by IAAF
The initial pace was set by Rubino, and it was cautious in the warm and humid conditions (22°C, 85%), with the first two quarters covered in 21:15 and 20:19. Suzuki went ahead, then was overtaken by Borchin and Zhen in the 15th kilometre. By the three-quarter mark, Borchin, the hot favourite, was seven seconds ahead of Zhen in 60:42, and virtually maintained that pace with a final 5Km of 19:14 for victory. The other medals went to Kanaykin, and López, who both moved up two places in the last quarter of the race. López won Colombia’s first-ever world medal, while in sixth, Kim Hyun-sub registered the best performance by a Korean in Daegu. Those achivements were ultimately upgraded to gold and bronze with the eventual disqualification of the original gold and silver medallists plus Yemelyanov, who was initially fifth. As detailed in the 20Km Walk report of 2009, Borchin was stripped of his gold medals from both Berlin and Daegu because of an abnormal haematological profile noted in his Athlete Biological Passport. Silver medallist Kanaykin was also found guilty in similar circumstances and from February 25, 2011, all his results were disqualified. Kanaykin was handed an eight-year ban as this was a second doping offence for him. This is the only World Championships event where both the first two finishers were disqualified for doping offences. López is rightfully Colombia’s first World Champion, though triple jumper Caterine Ibargüen actually received her gold three years before his promotion was confirmed. Two further Russians – Yemelyanov (fifth) and Morozov (12th) – were both also disqualified when later checks of their Athlete Biological Passports revealed attempted use of a prohibited substance or method. As was Ukraine’s Dmytrenko, initially seventh but temporarily up to fourth while earlier sanctions were applied. So four of the original top seven in this race (1-2-5-7) had their results annulled.
