Overview by IAAF
Talk of a possible world record attempt by Kipruto, who had missed that record by 0.01 seconds six weeks earlier, was quickly muted when Ramolefi led the field through a cautious first kilometre of 2:47.63. The pace was still slow at 2000m with Araptany leading in 5:33.42. The Ugandan teenager still led at the bell, and continued to hold off Kemboi until 220m from the finish. At that point the Kenyan erupted from the field, and held a 10m margin coming out of the last water jump. Certain in the knowledge that he had retained his title, Kemboi drifted out to lane seven by the time he reached the line, and pumped his fists in celebration. Behind him Kipruto was a solid second and never in danger of losing to Mekhissi, despite the closeness of the times. This was Kemboi’s fifth consecutive medal in the World Championships, a clear testimony to his remarkable competitive record.
