Overview by IAAF | |||
Even without injured Asafa Powell and suspended Steve Mullings, Jamaica were favourites to retain their world title. They qualified comfortably with Dexter Lee substituting for Usain Bolt. Carter again led off the Jamaican quartet in the final, and was level with Trinidad’s Bledman at the first exchange. Frater then ran a superb leg, giving 232 DOHA 2019 PAST RESULTS/WORLD CHAMPS MEN’S 4x100m RELAY Jamaica a slight advantage over the USA. Blake flew round the curve and would have given Jamaica a lead of two metres, had not a collision then occurred between the USA and Britain. Incoming Patton bumped into waiting Aikines-Aryeetey, ruining the chances of both teams and that of Trinidad when the tumbling Patton rolled into their path. Bolt was therefore left with an advantage of nearly eight metres when he took the baton. He came home in 37.04, breaking by 0.06 the world record which had stood since the Beijing Olympics. No official splits were available, but times taken from video would appear to be 10.2, 9.0, 9.0 and 8.8. Behind the Jamaicans, France found themselves as fortuitous silver medallists in 38.20, with St. Kitts even more surprised to win bronze just ahead of Poland. “We were feeling wonderful,” said Blake, who was judged to have made a pivotal contribution to the win and the record. | |||
