Overview by IAAF
Cheruiyot, nearly 10 seconds faster than anyone else with her 14:20.87 in July 2011, was attempting to retain her title and also to become the only woman other than Tirunesh Dibaba to win the world 5000/10,000m double.”Tiru” was absent from Daegu with another unspecified injury, but her younger sister Genzebe was there and was one of the heat winners along with former Olympic Champion Defar. No-one was interested in setting a fast pace in the final and the race was led by Niisha (3:01.87 at 1000m) and Zadorohznaya (6:07.18 at 2000m). Cheruiyot was in the lead at 3000m (9:10.97), and was surprised that no-one was keen to apply pressure. She shared the lead with Masai, passing 4000m in 12:13.72, and started to crank up the pace with 600m remaining. At the bell (13:56.68) there were still seven in contention, but with 200m left only Defar and Kibet were in touch with the flying Cheruiyot, and a final 200m in 29.17 sealed her victory. Kibet passed Defar in the last 50m to win silver. History repeated itself in that the top four were the same as in Berlin though then Cheruiyot’s last lap was 58.62 whereas in Daegu it was “only” 58.68!
