Overview by IAAF | |||
Between them, Adams and (initially) Ostapchuk had won six of the 12 available medals since 2003, and had the top 11 marks of the season, so it was no surprise to find them on the podium again. Gong (19.64) and Camarena-Williams (19.63) led until the third round, when Adams (20.04), Ostapchuk (19.87) and Kolodko (a personal best of 19.78) all clicked. Adams put the gold medal beyond doubt in the next round with 20.72, as Camarena-Williams improved to 20.02. Ostapchuk went into silver medal position in the fifth with 20.05, but for reasons set out in the report of the 2007 shot put, she was ultimately stripped of that medal, her third such forfeit after 2005 & 2007. On the last throw of the competition Adams “smashed the crap out of the shot” and it landed 21.24 away from the circle. The popular New Zealander bounded around with glee when she saw the measurement, which was a lifetime best and Commonwealth record, and equalled Lisovskaya’s ancient championship record from 1987. The winner had since 2010 been coached by Jean-Pierre Egger, who was also the trainer of triple male World Champion Werner Günthör. | |||
