Overview by IAAF | |||
The US led from the gun in the final, with Verburg heading Williams 45.0 to 45.3. Individual silver medallist McQuay, who had produced a 43.4 in the 2012 Olympic final, only needed 44.1 to extend the lead by a further two metres, though Belgium’s Kevin Borlée was fastest of all with 44.04. Despite a leg of 'only’ 44.87 by 19 year-old Hall, the US was again able to widen its lead by 1200m, this time to 1.34 seconds. Belgium, with the third Borlée brother in as many legs (Dylan), held onto second by less than a metre from Russia, with Britain two metres further back. Merritt came home 10m clear of Jamaica. Their anchor Francis ran brilliantly to move from fifth to second and then hold off the lethal finish of Krasnov. The 18 year-old Jamaican clocked 44.05, much the fastest of all the anchors. In 2017, Russia were stripped of the bronzes because their lead-off man Dyldin was sanctioned for failing a doping re-test of his sample from the Beijing Olympics. | |||
