Overview by IAAF | |||
With an 8:30 start, the conditions were much better than for the 20Km walk, with the temperature ranging from 17 to 22°. The early leaders were Ryzhov and Noskov, who went through the first two 10Km sections in 44:26 and 1:28:36. The main pack was almost 20 seconds further back, but over the next 5Km Sudo and Heffernan closed fast on the leaders. Sudo led at the 25Km mark, and at 30Km (2:12:17) the leading pack began to dissolve. Diniz, on two warnings, dropped back as Heffernan began to apply pressure. The Irishman had a small lead over Ryzhov at 35Km. The Russian continued to fight, and it was only just past 40Km (2:55:04) that Heffernan finally got away. Covering the last 10Km in 42:52, Heffernan won by just over a minute, a rich reward after a series of fourth places in championship competition (some of which have since been upgraded to bronzes). Ryzhov was a fine second, with Australia’s Tallent adding a fifth global medal to his collection. “Being an Irishman taking on the Russian [walkers] in Moscow is like Ireland beating Brazil at football in Brazil,” joked Heffernan, who won his gold medal on the 30th anniversary of Eamonn Coghlan’s 5000m victory for Ireland at the first World Championships. Russian fortunes dipped further when Ryzhov was found to have had an irregularity in his Athlete Biological Passport dating back to September 9, 2012. Futhermore, he failed a separate doping control test for a prohibited substance in July 2015. He was stripped of the Moscow silver medal. That instead went again to Tallent, with Glavan upgraded to bronze. | |||
