Overview by IAAF | |||
With 23 consecutive victories and an unbeaten 2013, Pars was an almost unanimous choice to win, and he duly took the lead in the opening round with 80.30. Then Fajdek created one of the biggest surprises of the meeting when he cast his hammer out to 81.97. The Pole admitted afterwards that he was “a little shocked”. He overcame his amazement with 80.92 – the second best throw of the competition – in the next round. Behind them, Murofushi was in third with his opening 78.03, but slipped back when Kozmus reached 79.21 and Melich 79.36. Interestingly, it was Fajdek who had previously been the last man to defeat Pars in June 2012. In tenth place it was now Sergey Litvinov, son of the former champion, and previously known as Sergei or Sergej. | |||
