Overview by IAAF
Tola was the early leader, passing 10Km in 31:22, but was caught by the leading pack before the 15Km point (46:39). The leading group totalled 22 athletes and reached halfway in a cautious 65:12. Tola continued to lead, with 5Km splits of 15:21, 15:25 and 15:24 leading up to 35Km, at which point the leaders were three Ethiopians, two Ugandans and a Kenyan. Olympic Champion Kiprotich and world leader Desisa emerged to duel the gold in the final kilometre. The Ugandan made a few unexpected diagonal movements as the two approached the stadium, leading Desisa to follow needlessly in his footsteps. This unsettling tactic worked and Kiprotich went clear enough to be able to tap hands with spectators in the compound before entering the stadium to win. The race started and finished in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium and comprised principally of three laps along the embankment of the Moskva river to Red Square and back.
