Overview by IAAF | |||
World leader Whiting had the first throw of the final, and his effort of 21.57 would remain in the gold medal position for more than half the competition. Storl was in silver medal position with his first two throws of 21.19 and 21.24 while Hoffa and Armstrong were battling for bronze. Whiting backed up his lead with 21.35 in the third round, but it was in the following round that the drama occurred. Storl, demonstrating his usual championship temperament, produced a massive throw and walked out of the back of the circle. The throw was judged a foul for what was thought to be a touch on the top of the board. Storl made an immediate oral protest. This was upheld by the referee on inspection of the on field video. The flag judge was quickly overruled, and the throw was measured at 21.73 to give Storl the lead and ultimately the gold medal. Armstrong moved into third place with his fifth-round 21.34. Whiting finished with 21.22, meaning that all his measure puts were beyond 21m. | |||
