Overview by IAAF | |||
Tamgho led at the end of the first round in the final with 17.65, after Pichardo reached 17.38 with the second jump of the competition. The 20 year-old Cuban then took the lead with 17.68, taking off 2cm from the front of the board. Tamgho and Taylor responded with fouls of around 18 metres. World Indoor Champion Claye moved into third place with his second jump of 17.33, and cemented his position with 17.52 in round three. Tamgho produced another long foul in the third, and took a countback lead in round four with 17.68. Yet another Tamgho 18m foul followed in the penultimate round, after Claye had reached 17.46 with his final jump (measured at 17.69 from toe to heel). On his last attempt, the confirmed champion Tamgho managed to hit the board accurately (with 6mm to spare) and produced a jump of 18.04. With phases of 6.16, 5.30 and 6.58, he became only the third man in history to span 18m legally after Jonathan Edwards and Kenny Harrison. Afterwards he paid tribute to his coach, the former long jump World Champion Iván Pedroso. “He taught me to be patient. It was hard to stay calm and he gave me a lot of experience.” | |||
