Overview by IAAF | |||
This promised to be a fascinating duel between Pearson, the Olympic Champion recovering from a hamstring problem, and Rollins, who had won the US title in 12.26, the fastest time for 21 years. After reaction times of 0.177 in both preliminary races, Rollins got a shocker of a start in the final, reacting in only 0.263. She was only seventh over the first hurdle, as Pearson and Porter led. Rollins had moved past Harper Nelson into third by the fourth hurdle while Pearson held a slim lead. The American Champion caught Pearson at the eighth, and finished half a metre clear. Porter was an equal distance further back in third place. Had Rollins got a reasonable start with better wind conditions, the then world record (12.21) might have been under threat. As it was she was able to celebrate her 22nd birthday a day early with a memorable win. In February 2019, eighth-placed Kondakova was one of 12 Russian atheletes sanctioned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. She was banned for four years and had four more years of results annulled including from Moscow 2013. Her appeal against that ban is still active as at July 31, 2019, so for the purpose of this book, her result stands. | |||
