Overview by IAAF | |||
The final was led early on by Simpson, with Obiri and Aregawi close behind. The defending champion passed 400m in a transponder time of 65.76, but slowed to 2:13.95 at 800m, with the field now closely bunched. Simpson reached the bell in 3:03.75 with only 17 year-old Cain detached from the pack of contenders. Aregawi – the 2013 world leader and undefeated at five Diamond Leagues – went to the front with 280m remaining. She was chased hard by Simpson but held on to win as the two clocked closing 200m transponder times of 28.79 and 29.06 respectively. Obiri took third ahead of England who progressed to fourth from seventh place in the last half-lap. | |||
