Overview by IAAF
The United States were missing Allyson Felix, such a key contributor to their previous victories, but unavailable following her hamstring tear in the Moscow 200m. Nevertheless the defending champions opened up a lead of three metres on the first stage, which Hastings extended to 10m before Firova gained all of the lost ground in the finishing straight. On stage three, Ryzhova put Russia clear by a couple of metres. Krivoshapka was able to pull further away on the anchor. With 200m remaining, her lead was seven metres, but McCorory pulled back all but two in an enthralling last 100m. Britain were third, while potential medallist Jamaica were disqualified in the heats when Whyte ran out of her lane on the first leg. Russia’s win enabled the hosts to end the championships on top of the Moscow gold medal table with seven golds to six by the United States, but that situation was temporary. The Russian gold total was reduced to six (with fewer silvers than the USA) once Krivoshapka’s doping offence was revealed, as noted under the report of the individual women’s 400m in Moscow. Under IAAF rule 41.1 the entire Russian relay squad were disqualified, including the team which won their heat without Krivoshapka.
